Motion FX (for Mac)

Photo Booth devotees who've longed for more dynamic video effects will find a lot to like in Autodesk's Motion FX. The free Mac app leverages an Apple computer's iSight camera to add fire, smoke, and numerous other visual effects to photos and video taken within the app. You can't import previous taken photos and video, and there are some minor issues with the Motion FXs ability to track and read items in its environment, but it?s a worthy download for those who like to tinker with goofy imagery.?

Getting Started
You'll see an image of yourself in the large viewing area when you launch Motion FX, but not a normal image. Instead, the app applies all manner of wacky effects as it cycles through green auras, blue flames, and the like. To start, you have to wave a hand so that the motion trackers pick up your movement (which it does rather quickly). Bringing the mouse to the bottom of the viewing area causes a toolbar to appear which contains over a dozen visual effects ranging from smoke to rainbow effects. You can switch between them on the fly simply by selecting a new effect. Above the viewing area is a strip that lets you tinker with several options that enhance the Motion FX experience: Face Detect, Mode, Effect Paint, Video Warp, and Reveal.

The Motion FX Experience
"Face Detect" lets you apply one of several effects to your eyes. The camera picks up on your orbs and applies an effect such as blue flame. I liked that Motion FX picked them up quickly, but it sometimes has problems maintaining the effect when I turned my head to a three-quarters angle.

"Mode" lets you select a color and have an effect apply only to the area in which the color appears. For example, when I clicked a red box in the background, flame effects appeared over every instance red in the camera's view. Motion FX was pretty accurate in nailing all the reds in its vision, but it also set ablaze light pink items, such as blouses or human tongues. It could use some refining.

"Effect Paints" lets you drawn lines or shapes that eventually dissipate into the effect you've selected; it creates a misty, almost ethereal look. "Video Warp" lets you warp the image by stretching and bending it to comical levels.

If you'd like to preserve your creations, you can snap still snapshots or record video by clicking the appropriate menu bar icon. There are five speeds for cycling through images, and the Reveal button opens the folder that contains either photos or video.

Should You Download Motion FX?
If you're in the mood for a few laughs, grab a friend, fire up Motion FX, and deep dive into the insanity. Creating goofy photos and video is incredibly fun when you can pretend that you're crying rainbows. Motion FX may not allow you to layer effects, or apply them to previously taken imagery, but it's a fun app that won't weigh on the wallet.

Bird flu research to be published in full

Two studies reporting what makes the H5N1 bird flu virus transmissible in mammals should be published fully, with no details left out, say flu experts meeting at the World Health Organisation in Geneva.

They say the benefits to public health outweigh the risks of bioterrorism, but they concede that publication should be delayed so scientists can "engage in public communication" aimed at preventing "unnecessary anxiety".

The decision to publish comes just a few short weeks after the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB), the US's top biosecurity panel, asked these virologists not to publish the research in detail.

The NSABB worried that bioterrorists would use the information to make dangerous, transmissible H5N1 ? or that other, less careful researchers would repeat the work and let the virus get away.

Why the difference? The researchers themselves have always wanted to publish without restriction, and of the 22 people who met in Geneva, fully half were leading flu researchers, and none of the rest were biosecurity experts concerned with bioterrorism.

Lightning rod

But it wasn't just a matter of researchers representing their own interests. Unlike the US panel, the Geneva group included public health experts from Indonesia and Vietnam, where people are dying of H5N1 and the virus is actively evolving. The chair of the censorship-favouring US panel, Paul Keim of Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, was also part of this agreement, which the WHO describes as unanimous.

The issue has become a lightning rod for debate because the only thing standing between H5N1 bird flu, which infects birds in half a dozen countries in Asia and in Egypt, and a nasty pandemic is that the virus is hard for humans to catch. But we now know it can it become easily transmissible, in mammals anyway. Last year two labs created versions of the flu that transmits fine in ferrets, the best stand-ins for people.

Most worryingly, one of the labs, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, discovered that as few as five mutations made H5N1 as catchable as ordinary flu, while remaining as lethal as bird flu is now ? and it kills around half the people who get it. This, says Keiji Fukuda, the WHO official who chaired today's meeting in Geneva, "changed our perception of the risk from H5N1".

Need-to-know basis

The two papers were submitted last year to the journals Nature and Science. US authorities ? because the US National Agency for Allergy and Infectious Disease funded the work ? sounded the alarm over fears that the Rotterdam work, especially, would provide a weapon to bioterrorists.

The NSABB met in Washington DC and in December asked that the work not be published in full, keeping the methods used to make the virus, and the mutations that made it nasty, under wraps.

The journals said they would accept this, as long as some mechanism could be found to get that information to people who needed it ? notably scientists handling H5N1 and public health authorities in countries with the virus, both of whom need to watch for those mutations.

Data minders

"Now that we know how easy it is for this virus to mutate [and] to spread in aerosols, there's every reason to suspect that in the natural environment this virus will emerge," says Bruce Alberts, editor of Science, speaking about the Geneva meeting on Friday at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Vancouver, Canada. "This is a tremendous opportunity to mobilise resources to protect against a pandemic. The information has to be made open so that this research can be done rapidly."

Finding a way to make it available, without publishing openly in the journals, was what the flu researchers had been trying to work out in Geneva over the last two days.

They gave up. There was no way, said Fukuda, to do this in a short time. "Who holds the sensitive information?" he said in a teleconference with reporters on Friday. "Who decides under what conditions to release it?"

In other words, should the US funders of the work decide who gets the withheld details? Or the American and British journal publishers? Must the poorer countries at risk from H5N1 depend on British and American largesse for data vital to protecting themselves, after they supplied the viruses with which the research was done in the first place? The political sensitivity of the issue may have carried more weight in Geneva than it did in Washington.

Weighing the risks

In addition, the researchers discount the possibility of a bioterrorist making the virus. "It's just too difficult for more than a few labs to do it," says Ab Osterhaus, head of the Rotterdam lab.

"What is the chance of a terrorist producing this virus? You have to be a pretty sophisticated scientist," agrees Alberts. The advantages of keeping scientific details from putative bioterrorists, he said, must be weighed against the advantages of working on vaccines, which "can be done more rapidly in an open environment".

Questions of bioterror are one thing. Making sure further work with the virus is done safely is another. The world's top flu labs recently agreed to a voluntary moratorium on the research until late March, while those issues are discussed.

Fukuda says the moratorium will be extended, while the WHO convenes another meeting with biosafety experts to discuss ways to take the research forward safely. "This may be a case where we limit the number of labs working on the virus, so we limit the chance of the virus escaping," says Alberts.

Family, fans mourn Whitney Houston with tears, prayers (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? From the New Jersey church where Whitney Houston's singing career first took flight to the Beverly Hills hotel where her life abruptly ended, family and fans of the pop diva expressed their grief on Sunday with prayer, tears and raw anguish.

Houston's only child, daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown, 18, was taken by paramedics from the hotel to nearby Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Sunday suffering from anxiety, Beverly Hills police and fire officials said.

A fire department spokeswoman declined to disclose any information about the daughter's medical condition but said she was "awake and talking" at the time she was transported.

Brown, who was reported by celebrity news website TMZ.com to have been enraged at authorities at not being allowed into the hotel room where her mother's body was found, was treated at the hospital for stress and released, a source close to the family told Reuters. A hospital spokeswoman declined comment.

At the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, Houston's hometown, fans and admirers gathered to celebrate her life during three Sunday services, portions of which were devoted to the singer and her family.

Cards and flowers were tied to the railings of the church, where congregants hugged and cried at the entrance. Among those paying their respects was the Reverend Jesse Jackson, the civil rights activist.

"The suddenness of it all leaves us traumatized," said Jackson, who watched Houston grow up and sing at New Hope. It was in that red brick church on a quiet backstreet near downtown Newark where Houston's career began as a soloist in a gospel choir in the 1970s.

"We must lean on our faith. Our hearts are heavy today," Jackson said.

CAUSE OF DEATH A MYSTERY

Houston, whose soaring voice lifted her to the top of the pop music world, but whose personal decline was fueled by years of drug abuse, died on Saturday afternoon in a fourth-floor room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. She was 48.

Police and the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office were continuing their investigation to determine a cause of death, which came on the eve of the Grammy Awards at the same hotel where Houston's mentor, record mogul Clive Davis, was holding an annual pre-event party.

Police said there was no immediate sign of foul play.

The Los Angeles Times, citing an unnamed source briefed on the case, reported that investigators were trying to discern whether she might have drowned in a bathtub shortly before she was set to attend the pre-Grammy gala.

The Times said Houston, disheveled, sweaty and smelling of alcohol, was behaving erratically when she stopped by the Hilton two days earlier, accompanied by her daughter, for rehearsals. She was seen flailing her hands frenetically, skipping around the ballroom and wandering aimlessless through the lobby, the newspaper said in its online editions.

Houston's death was expected to be a central focus of Sunday night's Grammys, and Jennifer Hudson was scheduled to sing a tribute during the program.

Houston's family expressed their grief in a brief statement issued on Sunday.

"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Whitney. This is an unimaginable tragedy and we will miss her terribly," it said. "We appreciate the outpouring of love and support from her fans and friends."

EX-HUSBAND 'DEEPLY SADDENED'

In a separate statement issued through People magazine, Houston's former husband, R&B singer Bobby Brown, with whom she had shared a long struggle with substance abuse, said, "I am deeply saddened at the passing of my ex-wife, Whitney Houston."

Brown, who is Bobbi Kristina's father, was described by an unnamed relative as "beside himself" with grief, according to the magazine.

On the West Coast, the First AME Church of Los Angeles, the city's oldest African-American congregation, held a special moment of silence in Houston's memory.

"Many of us were rooting and pulling for her because she has been a blessing to this generation with talent, with a special anointed voice," Pastor John Hunter told parishioners. "We will miss her. This world will miss her."

Up to 200 people attended the Newark church's services, where Denise Dean, 57, recalled once hearing Houston sing. Dean said she still has her faded autograph on an old checkbook.

"We prayed for the family," Dean said afterward.

Coroners removed Houston's body from the Beverly Hilton after midnight through a back door to avoid the crush of media set up to cover her death.

Typically, coroners conduct an autopsy within a day or two, at which point they might release some preliminary information about the death. If drugs or alcohol are involved, however, an official cause of death would not be released until after toxicology tests, which could take six to eight weeks.

By late Sunday afternoon, neither police nor coroners officials had offered an update. But TMZ reported that the autopsy had been completed.

Houston's songs were already dominating Internet music sales early on Sunday. Her album "Whitney Houston - The Greatest Hits" was the top seller in the music category on Amazon.com, and her signature hit, "I Will Always Love You," was the No. 1 download at iTunes.

Over the course of a 30-year career in which she established herself as one of the most-admired and influential singers of her time, Houston won six Grammys, 30 Billboard awards and 22 American Music Awards.

The soundtrack for the hit movie in which she starred, "The Bodyguard," was among the best-selling film soundtracks ever.

By the early 1990s, Houston's success on stage was accompanied by an increasingly troubled personal life. In 1992 she married singer Bobby Brown and their tumultuous 14 years together were marred by drug abuse and domestic violence.

The last 10 years of Houston's life were dominated by drug use, rumors of relapses and trips to rehab.

China to ban names that signal 'orphan' status

An orphanage in Wuhu, in eastern China's Anhui province in Aug. 2009.

By Kari Huus, msnbc.com

Institutions in China that care for orphans will no longer be allowed to name children in their care in ways that signal their parentless status, a government ministry said this week, according to a report in the state-controlled China Daily.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs plans to issue new regulations set of rules to prohibit orphanages from using naming conventions that make it easy for other Chinese speakers to guess that an individual is an orphan?leading to lifelong stigma.

The article explains that some institutions named children in their care for where they were abandoned. Others gave children the surname ?Guo? or ?Dang?? to indicate the child was in care of the ?State? or ?Party.?

"We don't want children who grow up in orphanages to carry labels that imply they are different from those who have parents," Chen Luann, a children's welfare worker told the newspaper.

The new regulations will require that orphans be given surnames chosen from among the 100 most common Chinese family names.

According to Zhang Hiring, with a nongovernmental group aimed at helping the country?s orphans, it was a step in the right direction: "This move shows the government is paying more attention to these children's psychological needs, which helps their development."

There are about 100,000 orphans living in about 900 orphanages and children?s homes, the article said, citing government statistics.

Heat use late run to top 76ers 99-79

(AP) ? Dwyane Wade scored 26 points, and LeBron James had 19 points and 12 rebounds to lift the Miami Heat to a 99-79 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night.

Mario Chalmers scored 13 points and Chris Bosh had 12 to help the Heat go on a dominant late run that put away the pesky Sixers.

The Heat used a 15-0 spurt in the fourth quarter to turn a tight one for 36 minutes into a comfortable victory and hand the Sixers just their third home loss of the season.

Thaddeus Young scored 16 points for the Sixers, who snapped a four-game winning streak.

Wade used a pair of ferocious dunks during the game-changing run that pushed the Sixers' first sellout crowd of the season toward the exits.

The Sixers opened the week with wins against Orlando and Chicago. The Heat squashed the home-week sweep.

Miami's 113-92 win on Jan. 21 was Philadelphia's only double-digit loss of the season. Entering the fourth, duplicating that feat seemed out of reach.

Unlike the Sixers, the Heat can turn to their stable of stars to crank up the pressure.

Wade started the run easily enough with free throws. Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller buried mid-range jumpers, James followed with a 3 and the game changed in a hurry.

The Sixers (12-3 at home) had grown used to the confetti gun blasting off after each victory. By the time they dusted off the seldom-used inspirational movie scene video reel, it was too late. Wade, Bosh and James were headed toward the bench, another win over the Sixers in the books.

The Heat played in Philadelphia for the first time since they blew a six-point lead with 95 seconds to play in Game 4 of their opening round playoff series. Jrue Holiday hit a late 3 that sliced the deficit to one and Lou Williams made the go-ahead 3-pointer from the top of the arc over a lunging Wade with 8.1 seconds left for an 86-82 win.

"Our first-round series against them was arguably the toughest, outside the finals," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said before the game.

Last season, opening round. This season, something deeper?

The Sixers had stamped themselves as a rising threat in the East. The Heat couldn't shake the upstart Sixers and never led by more than seven points in the first half.

The Sixers have done serious damage this season in the third quarter, putting teams away with big runs and tough defensive efforts. The Bulls scored 11 points in the third Wednesday. The Magic scored only nine points Monday.

The defense was as tight as usual, limiting the Heat to 16. The offense (6 of 18) never got going.

Bosh's putback ended an 0-for-10 start to the third for the Heat for a two-point lead. While the Heat struggled, the Sixers couldn't capitalize. Elton Brand and Tony Battie, two frontcourt starters, both went scoreless.

Andre Iguodala, who has cranked up his numbers when the Sixers need him most, continued with the clutch stops. He intercepted a pass from Wade into the post and drove the length of the court for a monster one-handed jam that had fans jumping out of their seats. But he went only 4 for 10 from the floor for 10 points.

The Sixers could never take the lead in the third and that cost them in the final minutes. James scored the last eight points of the third, including a long jumper that made it 67-63. Iguodala buried a 50-footer that was waved off after review.

Philadelphia's winning streak was put to rest in the fourth.

Notes: The Heat only made 11 of 20 free throws. ... The Heat made up for that number with just nine turnovers. ... The Sixers missed eight of their first nine shots in the third quarter. ... Rick Mahorn, Jane Pauley, Garry Trudeau and Mary Carey were all at the game.

Blog Archive ? Learning Fertility Acupuncture - Health and Fitness ...

When hunting around for ways to significantly improve one?s chances of conception, one needs to look not to much further than the unconventional, and the unconventional to us is no doubt fertility acupuncture. However, while that may catch some people off guard, there are a lot of different reasons as to why it may be so opportune and we will prepare to show you exactly why this suggestion is not as unexpected for us as it may be for you.

Was that not what you were expecting?

Go ahead and toss out all your old expectations then, because the days of tracking down a doctor for all the answers are over. We will review some of the most basic ways to improve fertility and debunk them to show off the advantages of fertility acupuncture. That said, let?s begin our list cutting with diet suggestions.

Simply put, how long does the typical diet even last for?

In fact, if we are realistic, brutally so, for a moment, we can easily admit that most diets that serve to drop only a few pounds always end in the same way, on that first day we drop out of our routine.

Not to worry, it happens to the best of us, and that is why diet can be so quickly ruled out of the lead in terms of finding a fertility improvement. Next up after diet is without question the case of medication. In recent years, medication has come to the forefront in treating or improving just about everything, but with these breakthroughs and advancements, the price has been hiked up on the consumers. In terms of fertility drugs, the price can crash into the tens of thousands, which is not an ideal figure as you prepare to pay for a whole new life.

I mean when was the last time you wrote down how much it costs to take care of yourself and then quadruple that number, because that?s more or less what one is talking about with taking on a new child. Thus, the best thing one can reasonably do is check out acupuncture. Now, many people have the thought that acupuncture is a crude and dangerous form of treatment that relies solely on having needles pushed into one?s face, but the truth is that it is a highly scientific form of alternative medicine. It has been around for centuries in China and its uses are for targeting specific areas, such as the place of birth. By inserting needles strategically in this region, one can increase the blood flow and allow for an improvement around ovarian functions. From a statistical and financial standpoint, it is by far the best way to increase one?s fertility and keep some money left over to actually look over your future son or daughter.

Not to mention that on top of fertility acupuncture being the best cost pitch, it has a relatively safe overhead. Provided one checks with their physician just to make sure they are aware of the procedure, one should be squared away to give it a shot and boost their chances for conception.

Obama details broader housing plan (AP)

FALLS CHURCH, Va. ? President Barack Obama called on Congress Wednesday to make it easier for millions of additional homeowners to refinance their mortgages at lower interest rates even if they owe more than their homes are worth. He conceded that his administration's housing plans so far have not lived up to their promise.

Calling the housing problem "massive in size and in scope," Obama detailed a proposal he outlined in his State of the Union speech last week, tackling an issue of vital concern in states key to his re-election.

"This housing crisis struck right at the heart of what it means to be middle class in America: our homes," Obama said, speaking at a northern Virginia community center.

Obama's proposal would give homeowners with privately held mortgages a shot at record low rates though a new government program, for an annual savings of about $3,000 for the average borrower.

The program is the latest administration effort to help homeowners in the face of a massive number of foreclosures and plunging house values that have left millions of borrowers owing more than their homes are worth. The administration plan aims to ease the way toward refinancing for borrowers, who despite good credit have been unable to take advantage of lower rates because they are underwater on their loans or because banks fear they will be left taking losses.

The administration has rolled out housing programs before with the hope of helping millions of struggling homeowners. But those initiatives have fallen short.

"I'll be honest, the programs we've put forward didn't work at the scale we'd hoped," Obama said. "Not as many people have taken advantage of it as we wanted."

The housing issue, while national in scope, resonates particularly in election battlegrounds like Nevada and Florida which have faced record foreclosures. Obama himself drew attention to the politics surrounding the issue with an indirect jab at former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, now the front-runner in the Republican presidential contests. Romney in October suggested the foreclosure process should "run its course and hit the bottom."

Without naming Romney, Obama said: "It is wrong for anyone to suggest that the only option for struggling, responsible homeowners is to sit and wait for the housing market to hit bottom. I refuse to accept that, and so do the American people."

The administration proposal faces a major hurdle in Congress. The program would cost between $5 billion and $10 billion, depending on participation, and the administration proposes to pay for it with a fee on large banks. The administration has tried unsuccessfully before to win support for such a tax on large banks. Administration officials, however, said Obama would consider other ways to pay for the program.

The plan would expand the administration's Home Affordable Refinance Program, which allows borrowers with loans backed by government-affiliated mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to refinance at lower rates. About 1 million homeowners have used it, well short of the 4 million to 5 million the Obama administration had expected. Moreover, many "underwater" borrowers ? those who owe more than their homes are worth ? couldn't qualify.

The administration estimates that 3.5 million borrowers with privately-held mortgages have high enough interest rates that they would have incentive to refinance under the new plan. That's in addition to 11 million borrowers who have Fannie- or Freddie-guaranteed loans who could be eligible for refinancing under the administration's proposed changes.

About 11 million Americans ? roughly 1 in 4 with a mortgage ? are underwater, according to CoreLogic, a real estate data firm.

Half of all U.S. mortgages ? about 30 million home loans ? are owned by nongovernment lenders.

The new administration plan would permit homeowners to refinance their mortgages into loans backed by the Federal Housing Administration. To qualify, borrowers with privately held mortgages would have to have no more than one delinquency in the six months preceding refinancing. Their loans would have to fall within the mortgage limits set by the FHA in their home counties.

The administration would encourage borrowers to apply their savings directly toward lowering the principle of their loans instead of reducing their monthly payments. As an incentive, borrowers who choose to rebuild equity would not have to pay closing costs and would have to agree to refinance into a loan with a 20 year term or less with monthly payments roughly equal to those they make under their current loan.

Obama also announced new industry standards for mortgage servicers, a sort of "bill of rights" for borrowers that would protect them in their transactions. During his remarks, Obama brandished a simpler, three-page loan document to illustrate the new standards.

The administration will also undertake a program that would allow the sale of foreclosed homes by Fannie Mae to investors who would then offer the properties for rental. Administration officials say there is a high demand for rental housing and such a program would also sustain neighborhoods by keeping foreclosed homes from falling into disrepair.

(AP) ? Thirty years ago Thursday, Syria's regime launched a withering assault on the rebellious city of Hama, leveling entire neighborhoods and killing thousands in one of the most notorious massacres in the modern Middle East.

Today Syria is in the throes of a new rebellion, and Hama stands as both a rallying cry for those trying for nearly 11 months to topple the regime and a dreadful warning of what the ruling Assad family is capable of doing to survive.

The entire city of 850,000 in the plains of central Syria shut down Thursday as residents observed a strike marking the anniversary.

Hundreds of troops and security forces flooded the streets, closing off public squares and setting up checkpoints to thwart planned protests in the city, which has been one of the centers of the past year's uprising against the rule of President Bashar Assad.

Still, activists made a commemoration. They painted two streets in Hama red with the color of blood and threw red dye into the ancient water wheels on the Orontes River, the city's most famous landmarks.

"Hafez died, and Hama didn't. Bashar will die, and Hama won't," they sprayed on sides of the water wheels.

Abu Anas, an engineer from the city, says the Hama massacre, carried out by Bashar's father and predecessor Hafez Assad, has been seared into the psyche of every Syrian. The name Hama has become equivalent to the word massacre.

"The stories have been passed on from the old generation to the new. Almost everyone in Hama today has an uncle, a grandfather or a brother who died or went missing. There is bitterness to this day," said Abu Anas, who asked to be identified by his nickname for fear of retaliation.

Amnesty International has estimated that between 10,000 and 25,000 people were killed in the 1982 siege, though conflicting figures exist and the Syrian government has never made an official estimate.

Abu Anas was a 25-year-old engineering student when, on the night of Feb. 2-3, 1982, the Syrian military began its assault to crush an uprising against Hafez Assad by the Muslim Brotherhood.

In a scorched-earth campaign commanded by Assad's brother Rifaat, troops surrounded the city, sealing it off, then swarmed in. For three weeks, they blasted it with tanks and artillery, battled with Brotherhood fighters and systematically leveled parts of the city.

After three weeks, entire neighborhoods had simply disappeared, the rubble hastily covered over afterward with concrete.

Throughout, nobody knew what was unfolding inside the sealed city. By the time the first journalists arrived, the bodies had largely been buried.

Thomas Friedman, in his 1989 book "From Beirut to Jerusalem," described a massive mess of crushed apartment buildings.

"The whole town looked as though a tornado had swept back and forth over it for a week ? but this was not the work of Mother Nature," he wrote.

For the next two decades, until his death in 2000, Hafez Assad ruled uncontested, with the memory of Hama in the minds of anyone who might rise up against him.

The differences between then and now are significant.

One is that the devastation of Hama came after a campaign of terror led by the Sunni fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood from the late 1970s that escalated in 1981 and 1982 with bombings and assassinations, including an attempt on the president himself, aimed at toppling the secular Assad regime, dominated by Syria's minority Alawite sect. A deeply conservative Sunni city, Hama was a center for the Brotherhood and was known for its history of hostility and dissent against the regime.

In contrast, the current uprising began in March with peaceful protests that have since spread around the nation, demanding Assad's ouster.

The 1982 rebellion "was undertaken by a party or a faction," said Zuhair Salem, the London-based spokesman for Syria's banned branch of the Brotherhood. "What is happening today is a popular movement."

So far Bashar Assad has not attempted anything on the scale of the Hama massacre. Still, his crackdown over the months has evoked memories of his father's brutal legacy.

In a mirror of Hafez handing the Hama command to Rifaat, Bashar has entrusted his own younger brother, Maher, with leading the crackdown. Troops, security forces and feared paramilitaries known as shabiha storm neighborhoods, buildings are shelled, activists have disappeared into custody only to be returned later dead to their families.

The conflict has grown more militarized as army defectors joined the uprising and formed a guerrilla force, protecting protesters but also attacking regime troops, which in turn brings a heavier regime assault on areas where they are holed up.

At least 5,400 people have been killed in the conflict since March, according to a U.N. estimate from December, and the number has grown by hundreds since.

"Today the massacre is being done in installments and distributed all across Syria," said Salem. "Today, all of Syria is Hama."

Three decades have brought sweeping changes to Syria. The Hama massacre could largely be hidden from the world, given the regime's lock on media. The world of satellite TVs, cellphones and the Internet has ensured that no such thing can happen today.

The Syrian government has largely banned journalists from trouble spots in Syria, but it can do little against the stream of amateur videos taken by activists and posted on the Internet. Residents and activists worried about contacting the outside world now turn to more secure Skype connections. Arabic channels beaming into every Syrian home mean state-run TV no longer has a monopoly on the narrative.

Today, Syria's fourth largest city is very much at the heart of the current uprising.

In the summer months, hundreds of thousands reportedly took part in huge anti-government demonstrations in the city's main Al-Assi square. Residents briefly seized control of large parts of the city.

But a heavy crackdown launched in August brought it all to an end. According to the Local Coordination Committees, an activist group that tracks the uprising, 1,015 people have been killed in Hama since March, making it second only to Homs in casualties.

The city is carved up into security zones by troops and security forces and an array of checkpoints, with snipers keeping a watch on the streets, residents say. Anti-government protests take place, but nothing even close to the numbers from the summer.

"I feel humiliation every day, I feel the cheapness of our lives," said Abu Anas, the engineer.

Abu Anas says he can never forget the atrocities he witnessed back in 1982. He remembers emerging from his home after the bombing had ceased and seeing a sea of rubble. Hands and feet poked from the wreckage.

"I will never forget the look of terror on people's faces," he said.

But he is hopeful things are different this time.

"They want to implement Hama solution today, but they can't," he said. "Times have changed, and people are ready to die for freedom."
