Industry News: Online Gaming Market Booming in the Arab world ...

?

The online gaming market is booming in the Arab world, according to a statement issued last week by the Arab Advisors Group.? According to the report, the number of online Arabic games went from 1 in September 2007 to 135 as documented November 2011.

The report also observed that as of late last month, the total number of users of Arabic games on Facebook averaged at 2.89 million per month.

Currently there are around 63 million internet users in the region with a penetration rate of 28.3% compared to the global average of 25.6% ? over 300 percent growth in the last five years, according to Internet World Stats.

The region average daily revenue per user is among the world?s highest, according to Turkey?s Peak Games, a fast-growing social gaming company. While it is about $0.06 in the United States and Europe, it is around $0.09? in the region.

The company has also stated that said that the value of the regional online gaming industry is about $100 million compared to last year?s estimated $70 million. The next phase of growth lies with Arabic localized content.

While internationally known ?first-person shooter? games from the West, such as Call of Duty are popular in the region, there is also demand for games with local characteristics. International companies are also responding to these observations.

US-based giant EA Sports, for example, has released an Arabic version of its FIFA soccer franchise on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in early 2012.

Word of Mouth Marketing: Book Review | Small Business Marketing ...

Andy Sernovitz?s Word of Mouth Marketing: How Smart Companies Get People Talking (Amazon link) is a practical, hands-on guide to building your business through word of mouth marketing.

Word of mouth marketing isn?t something is difficult to do ? you just need to 1) get started, 2) do it consistently, and 3) pay attention to what is working, what isn?t, and adjust accordingly. Andy?s book give you the tools and advice you need to do those three things. Here is a quick overview of what you will find in the book.

The first part of the book outlines the ?essential concepts? of word of mouth marketing. Chapter 1 defines word of mouth marketing, outlines what makes it work (and what doesn?t), and explains how word of mouth marketing is most likely already your best source of business, even if you have been calling it something else.

Chapter 2 discusses the ?deep stuff? relative to marketing and the increasing importance of word of mouth in growing your business. Part 1 of the book wraps up with a Word of Mouth Marketing Manifesto ? 13 key points to keep in mind when designing and operating your word of mouth marketing campaigns.

Part 2 of the book focuses on ?how to do it?, namely, how to implement Sernovitz?s 5 T?s of word of mouth marketing:

  1. Talkers ? those who will tell their friends about you
  2. Topics ? what they will talk about
  3. Tools ? you can use to make it easier for the message to travel
  4. Taking part ? or joining the conversation
  5. Tracking ? measuring and understanding what is being said about you

The book provides several examples and worksheets to help you use these 5 T?s to implement your own word of mouth marketing campaign. You can also download the worksheets from the books website ? http://wordofmouthbook.com

Other Notes

I think this is my favorite take away from the book:

?? if you choose to be a better business, you will do bigger business.?

and my second favorite quote is:

?Advertising is the cost of being boring.?

Don?t be boring, it?s too expensive.

How does Word of Mouth Marketing apply to small business and independent professionals?

This probably (hopefully?) seems like a silly question because, as pointed out on page 32, word of mouth has always been your best marketing.

So pick up a copy of Word of Mouth Marketing: How Smart Companies Get People Talking, and choose to be a better business.

One last note

While this book isn?t about social media, per se, if you are looking for guidelines for creating a social media policy for your business, take a look at the Honesty ROI starting on page 27. In this case, ROI stands for relationship (say who you?re representing), opinion (only say what you really believe), and identity (never lie about who you are). Following these simple rules and teaching them to your employees is a great social media policy as well as for building a business people want to talk about.

The Low-Down on Polyamorous Relationships | Madame Noire ...

Our usual work banter grew silent. There was the pivotal moment of awkward silence, where every woman either had to choose her bohemian or standardized self. Your take on sex in the workplace was everything; anything you said might slight you forever.

I spoke first, neutrally of course, ?He said?that?he?s what??

The topic of the conversation, Diane, mouthed the words ?Polyamorous.?

Some girls in the room wore their ?WTF? faces, others raised an eyebrow in intrigue and I smiled. I?d heard this once before: It was circa 2005, in the warmth of a fireplace and the aura of good women. Someone was eager to learn why another?s baby?s father had been absent. The girl told us all that he practiced polyamory; the practice, desire, or acceptance of having more than one intimate relationship at a time with the knowledge and consent of everyone involved (via Wikipedia).

She replied with no hint of agitation, ?He?s been with his other woman.?

Most of us at that time were convinced she?d lost her mind. The room was set ablaze with conversation that day, debates pummeling back and forth between vigorous and strong-minded women.

In present day, the room just fell quiet. The girls nodded their heads in understanding and through listening, I discovered that every one of them had been involved with a polyamorous brother?or sister.
1)????? Alicia said she was cool with it, while it was happening. She beamed at the recollection, ?He told me on the third date that he had another girl. He said sometimes it might even be two, but he never went past three. At first I was mad, but then I realized that we were just having fun, right?? The last word of her sentence seemed to tremble, another notion lingering behind her faux confidence.

2)????? Kai said she was blown away by it. She said she?d never had a woman in all her bisexual life be upfront about ?cheating? the way this man was. ??When I confronted him about the texts, he was calm! He told me that he was polyamorous and proud and that if I couldn?t accept his lifestyle, then we couldn?t be together. He said he was going to tell me when the time was right. Tuh!?

3)????? Diane seemed perplexed by it all. We?d been following her excursions with her new boo since inception. The two met in her neighborhood and went on one date. On the second outing, after a few bouts of wine and tango, they settled into good conversation. It was only then he?d bring up a girlfriend who was in the Peace Corps, who also had a girlfriend, and his diehard polyamory.

She asked us what we thought and I was quite confused myself. I had so many questions. Does polyamory lead to polygamy? Or will he just choose ?the one? when it?s time for marriage or when the time is right? If there is a ?the one? in the polyamorous world, why all the experimentation? What happens if one person doesn?t know about it? Is it cheating then? Isn?t polyamory just an open relationship? The expert Googler that I am (my ONE boyfriend calls me that) scoured the net for some answers, and here?s what I came up with.

a)????? Polyamorous relationships vary on boundaries, set rules, agreements, possessiveness and gender equality. They are all individualistic. Hmmmm.

b)????? Apparently, if only one side of the relationship becomes/is polyamorous and there is a child/property involved, it is usually hidden. Such a lifestyle can hinder custody/divorce cases.

c)?????? I got this via Wikipedia: Children treat parents? partners as a form of stepparent or are told to think of them as aunts and uncles. (Hmmmm. I know plenty of people who?ve experienced this in their childhood homes and it wasn?t polyamory. That was something different entirely.)

d)????? The difference between polyamory and polygamy is that polygamy involves multiple marriages with one man and polyamory is just intimacy/romance shared between multiple people, typically those who are unmarried.

e)????? Polyamory is unlike an open relationship, because most open relationships are based on sexual relations. In polyamory, you can have a full-fledged loving relationship with your significant other?one or all of the others.

I don?t think I need to elaborate, if you?d like to investigate further, by all means. However, my concern right now is the frequency of the mention of polyamory within my circle and many others. Is he really polyamorous or is this just a really exquisite way of cheating? Is this phenomenon the new ?I-didn?t-know-we-were-claiming-one-another?? Because if it?s going to be, I need to know all the rules so I can give my girls the appropriate arsenal to call you out, if you?re BS?ing.

If this is what floats your boat, enjoy yourself. Personally, I don?t agree nor will I ever practice this. I?m all about monogamy: This everlasting bond between another soul and my own is filler enough. That and well?my writing.

How do you feel about polyamory?

This research would happen in two phases:? phase a single would support educate process force members and seek the advice of with stakeholders and specialists on working an trade in the state? stage two would contain implementing the recommendations of the activity force if it is made the decision that Wyoming should take part in the operation of an trade. DOI has indicated that no legislative action is required to carry out the duties of the grant, unless the state decides to pursue the operation of an exchange. The white paper also outlines that numerous crucial governmental organizations will participate in the attempts, which will be facilitated by the College of Wyoming.

Google Analytics Opt-out Add-on for Chrome

Many websites and services make use of Google Analytics, a web statistics service that is tracking web users on websites where the script is installed. Besides the tracking, there is also the aspect of loading times that are affected by the script. Web users who do not want to be tracked, or want sites to load faster, may want to consider blocking the Google Analytics script from running on sites they visit.

Firefox users can use the excellent NoScript add-on for that, which takes care of both issues. Chrome users can install comparable solutions like NotScript or ScriptNo. Some may however feel that they interfere to much with day-to-day web browsing.

blocked-google-analytics

The Google Analytics Opt-out Add-on for the Chrome browser may not be the perfect solution, as it only tackles the tracking problem but not the loading of the script itself, but it does not interfere with other scripts running on the site. The Chrome extension has been created by Google, which may be the reason why the script is not blocked outright. According to information posted on the Chrome Web Store, the add-on ?communicates with the Google Analytics JavaScript (ga.js) to indicate that information about the website visit should not be sent to Google Analytics?.

It basically means that the script is loaded, and that the add-on notifies the script that the visit should not be tracked.

Another solution that is working universally on the system would be to block Google Analytics in the hosts file. Simply add the following two lines to your hosts file:

  • 127.0.0.1 www.google-analytics.com
  • 127.0.0.1 ssl.google-analytics.com

On Windows, the hosts file is located in the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc directory. Just open it in a plain text editor like Notepad, and add the two rows to the end of it. This basically redirects requests that websites make to Google Analytics servers to the local system where the script can?t be found. Webmasters should keep in mind that this may prevent them from accessing the Google Analytics website.

    New coasters offer one-of-a-kind thrills

    Courtesy of Dollywood

The Wild Eagle reaches 21 stories above Dollywood, giving riders a speeding view of the Smoky Mountains.

    By Rob Lovitt, msnbc.com contributor

Thrill-seekers hoping to go bigger, higher or faster on new roller coasters this year may be disappointed ? although they?ll probably be screaming too loud to pout about it for long.

From outstretched wings to water elements, ride designers and theme park operators are upping the thrill factor through design and technology rather than vying for new records for height or speed.

?The technology and design have evolved more in the last couple of years than they have in the last 20,? said Dennis Speigel, president of International Theme Park Services Inc., a Cincinnati-based theme park consulting company.

The result is that this year?s coaster crop ?offers really, really different thrills,? said Gary Slade, publisher and editor in chief of Amusement Today, an industry trade magazine. ?It?s a nice assortment of rides and experiences.?

If that sounds like fun, climb aboard, buckle up and ride along:

    Wild Eagle, Dollywood
Scream season got off to a high-flying start when this raptor-themed ride took flight on March 23. The first wing coaster in the U.S., it features floorless cars in which riders sit on either side of the track, feet dangling as they fly through four inversions, including a giant loop, zero-gravity roll and giant flat spin, as they soar through the surrounding forest. ?Swooping through the natural terrain of the forest really gives you the feeling of flying,? said Robb Alvey, creator of ThemeParkReview.com.

X Flight, Six Flags Great America

Courtesy of Six Flags Great America

X Flight reaches 55 mph during 3,000 feet of intense drops and five inversions.

Take a 12-story first drop, five inversions and nothing beneath your feet but a whole lot of air and you?ve got X Flight, the nation?s second wing coaster. This one, though, adds another twist ? a vertical, keyhole-shaped flythrough that you approach horizontally before making a last-second 90-degree pivot to pass through, presumably intact. ?No matter how many times you ride it, you still want to tuck your legs in under your seat,? said Slade.

    Verbolten, Busch Gardens Williamsburg

    Courtesy of Busch Gardens Williamsburg

Verbolten's 48-inch ride-height requirement allows parents to introduce their young ones to zooming thrills.

Opened on May 18, this ?immersive thematic attraction? simulates a car-based trip through a ?forbidden? Black Forest, complete with high-speed turns, a free-fall drop, and sound, light and other environmental effects. It?s designed to be more exhilarating than overpowering ? its top speed is a family-friendly 53 mph ? although the final, 88-foot drop to the park's Rhine River will likely tighten certain body parts. ?It perfectly fills that family thrill ride void left by Big Bad Wolf,? said Alvey.

    Goliath, Six Flags New England?

    Courtesy Six Flags New England

Goliath, which opens May 25, features a 65 mph free-fall.

They call it a coaster of epic proportions but it?s not the size that matters on this looping boomerang ride. Strapped in face-down, riders are hauled to the top of a nearly 20-story tower, where they?re released for a 65-mph free-fall, sent through a 102-foot vertical loop and a 110-foot butterfly (twisting) turn and rocketed up a second tower. Don?t relax, though, because you then get to do most of it again ? facing backwards. ?If you're scared of heights or going backwards,? said Alvey, ?it?ll challenge your fears." Opening May 25.

    Manta, SeaWorld San Diego

    Seaworld

Manta, which opens May 26, features 20-seat, manta ray-shaped trains that skim the water.

This launch coaster won?t be the tallest (highest drop: 54 feet) or fastest (top speed: 43 mph) ride when it opens on May 26 but it may be the most unusual. Sitting in 20-seat, ray-shaped trains, riders are launched out of a tunnel enhanced with oversized projections of rays and put through more than a dozen turns, including one in which the train?s wings skim through the water. ?It doesn?t have a big vertical span,? said Slade, ?but when you?re that close to the ground, it can really heighten the sense of speed.?

Of course, if you still feel the need for speed (and/or height), rest assured you?ll get your chance. At least three more coasters ? Apocalypse at Six Flags America, Skyrush at Hersheypark and Superman: Ultimate Flight at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom ? are expected to open later this spring.

That 'Minority Report' interface? It's now only $70 away

    44 min.

If you've ever watched "Minority Report" and wished that you could interact with your computer just by waving your hands around, then you might want to take a look at the Leap. It's a tiny little gadget which will supposedly allow you to control your devices by waving your hands, wiggling your fingers, or fidgeting with a pen.

Of course there's plenty of 3-D?motion-control technology out there already ??the Kinect comes to mind, for example?? but the Leap will still blow your mind. (If you think I'm?exaggerating, just watch the video below and tell me that you didn't get at least a bit excited.)

Made by Leap Motion, a motion-control software and hardware company, the Leap is marketed as "the world's most accurate 3-D motion control device." It is supposedly 200 times more sensitive than existing technologies, can detect motion within a space of four cubic feet, is accurate to within 1/100th of a millimeter, and can detect all ten of your fingers (as well as objects such as pens).

The Leap will connect to your computer via USB and calibrate in just one step. You will be able to fine-tune the device's sensitivity settings, create custom gestures, and even network multiple Leap devices together to create a larger interaction space.

"I believe?the Leap is the future of how people will interact with their devices,? says?Bill Warner, founder of Avid Technology and one of Leap Motion's investors, in a press release.??What's previously been an expensive special effect in movies is now an affordable everyday reality, in full 3-D. With the Leap, you use both hands and all 10 fingers?to work?within your computer's virtual environment just as easily as you do in the real world.?

The Leap will be priced at $69.99 and will ship this winter. It can be pre-ordered on the Leap Motion site right now. I will, of course, try to get my hands on one as soon as possible so that I can see if it really is as incredible as it looks in Leap Motion's demo?video.

(AP) ? A 13-year-old boy rescued at the top of a 270-foot waterfall in Washington state says he just wanted to cool off, but soon found himself stuck precariously on a rock for hours as crews tried to reach him.

"I wanted to go in ... just to wade a little bit," William Hickman said at a news conference Monday where he was joined by the people who staged the dramatic, middle-of the night operation.

It had been warm earlier in the day Saturday, and Hickman said he and his 9-year-old brother thought they could get in a quick dip.

"I was pretty determined to go swimming, to get in the water," he said.

But the whitewater swept him over a 10-foot waterfall. He managed to pull himself onto a narrow rock shelf just before the main falls.

In the water, Hickman said he just focused on keeping his feet pointed downstream, like a character in a book from the popular "Pendragon" series he once read.

That advice may have helped save his life.

The current pushed him toward a narrow rock shelf just above Wallace Falls northeast of Seattle, and he was able to scramble out to wait for rescuers.

He stayed there, cold and wet, for the next eight and a half hours. His father shouted encouragement, telling him he was going to be OK. Crews later tossed him blankets, energy bars and fruit snacks.

Hickman said he wasn't frightened, at first. He said that once he finished coughing up the water he had swallowed, he realized how precarious his situation was.

"I wasn't really scared until after I got on top of the rock," the boy said. "I was shocked that I landed there, that I was not going to go down and die."

Officials released a video Monday of the rescue operation.

The video shot by a volunteer rescuer, shows Hickman huddled on a narrow, sloping rock shelf with his back to the water just above the popular hiking attraction.

One roped-up rescuer cautiously makes his way to the boy using an aluminum ladder as a foothold, and then guides him up a rock wall to safety.

Rescuers first tried to reach him by helicopter, but the rock overhanging the shelf prevented them from dropping straight down. Instead, a helicopter crew dropped two rescuers 200 yards below him.

The rescuers climbed above the rock overhang, and then worked as a team ? one rappelling down, the other belaying, a system by which rescuers use ropes to lower people. Their goal was just to reach the boy and place him in a harness that would keep him safe until others arrived, said Deputy Bill Quistorf, chief pilot for the Snohomish County sheriff's air support unit.

As one rescuer rappelled down, he tried to swing under the overhang. His rope, rubbing against the rock, snapped, and he plunged into the whitewater. Only his secondary rope saved him from going over the big falls, and he made it to shore with minor injuries.

Other rescuers hiked up the trail, and arrived to find the boy standing on the rock, wet and hypothermic. They set up a rigging that would allow them to rescue him, including a 24-foot aluminum ladder placed horizontally across the river and secured with several ropes.

The video shows the ladder secured to the shore on one end and suspended in the water under the rock ledge by two ropes on the other end. The rescuer who reached the boy uses it as a foothold, helps him rope up and then helps him climb up the rock wall.

The 10 rescuers camped with him overnight, and a sheriff's office helicopter flew them down off the mountain at 6 a.m. Sunday. There was no place for the helicopter to land to pick them up, so the boy and the rescuers rode on a platform hanging from a cable 80 feet below the helicopter.

His mother, Heather Hickman, got a phone call from his dad Sunday morning.

"Their dad said, 'I got something to tell you about last night, we almost lost William.' I told him he will never take my sons to a river again," Heather Hickman said. "He could've died, we could be having a totally different conversation right now."

Former Rutgers student gets 30 days jail for bias crime

NEW BRUNSWICK, New Jersey (Reuters) - A former Rutgers University student was sentenced on Monday to 30 days in jail for a bias crime after he spied on his roommate's gay encounter in a case that drew national attention to bullying.

Dharun Ravi, 20, had faced a possible maximum sentence of 10 years behind bars for using a webcam to invade the privacy of his roommate, Tyler Clementi, and an older man in their college dorm room.

Clementi, 18, jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge in September 2010, days after learning Ravi watched them through the computer-mounted camera and used social media to encourage others to do so. Ravi was not charged with causing Clementi's death.

In handing down the relatively light sentence, Judge Glenn Berman emphasized that he never referred to Ravi's action as a hate crime - a term commonly used to describe bias intimidation laws - but rather as a bias crime.

"I don't believe he hated Tyler Clementi. He had no reason to. But I do believe he acted out of colossal insensitivity," Berman said.

The judge then sentenced Ravi to 30 days in jail, followed by three years probation, 300 hours of community service as well as counseling about cyberbullying and alternative lifestyles.

He ordered Ravi to pay $10,000 for a community-based organization that assists victims of bias crimes and to pay $1,900 in penalties.

"I heard this jury say 'guilty' 288 times. Twenty-four questions, 12 jurors. That's the multiplication. I haven't heard you apologize once," Berman told Ravi.

The judge also pledged to recommend that Ravi, who was born in India and grew up in the United States, not be deported. A similar recommendation was made by the older man, identified only as M.B., in a letter his lawyer read in court before sentence was imposed.

Berman said the jail time was punishment, in part, for Ravi's efforts to get others to watch a second planned attempt to use the webcam, considered a bias crime, and for evidence tampering for destroying text messages.

Prosecutors said they would the sentence, which would otherwise begin on May 31.

Even though prosecutors did not seek the maximum sentence "it was expected that his conviction on multiple offenses of invading the privacy of two victims on two separate occasions, four counts of bias intimidation against Tyler Clementi, and the coverup of those crimes, would warrant more than a 30-day jail term," Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan said in a statement.

As he listened to the judge, Ravi sat wide-eyed, far more stoic than moments earlier when he sobbed as his crying mother begged the court for leniency for her son.

"Dharun's dreams are shattered and he has been living in hell for the past 20 months," she told the judge.

She spoke a few moments after Clementi's mother, both of them recalling meeting in the dorm room on the first day of college, each remembering the other's son as somewhat standoffish.

    MIXED REACTION FROM GAY ADVOCATES

Through her tears, Jane Clementi urged the judge to "do the right thing" and punish Ravi for his actions to show the world how wrong they were. She was stunned that even after Clementi requested a roommate change upon learning of the spying, no one came to his defense.

"Why didn't any of them speak up and stop it? How did it spiral so out of control? They knew it was wrong, yet no one stopped, no one stood up to the mastermind, the 'computer genius'," she said.

After the sentencing, the Clementis, who had earlier planned to make a statement to the media, and the Ravis rushed in separate directions from the courthouse without comment.

The verdict prompted a mixed reaction from gay advocates, some of whom thought Ravi was being unfairly punished for Clementi's suicide and should not be jailed. One who called for leniency was gay rights activist Bill Dobbs, who described the short sentence as a "relief."

"The judge went a long way to take the pressure off an out-of-control prosecution," Dobbs said.

But Garden State Equality CEO Steven Goldstein, who wanted Ravi to serve jail time, said it was far too short. "This was not merely a childhood prank gone awry. This was not a crime without bias," Goldstein said in a statement.

New Jersey State Senator Joe Vitale, who sponsored the bias crime legislation, backed the sentence.

"Mr. Ravi intended to intimidate and humiliate Tyler based on his sexual orientation. I think the sentence was altogether appropriate," Vitale, a Democrat, said in a statement.
