How To Go From A Retail Job To Apple HQ - Business Insider

One complaint?among many?that Apple's retail workers have is that the job is basically a dead end: Besides advancing in the retail ranks, there's little hope of landing a job at Apple headquarters helping build the products you sell.

We just found one dramatic exception. His name is Ray Fernando Jr.

His LinkedIn profile makes it pretty obvious how he did it. First, Fernando picked the right store to work in: Apple's Palo Alto flagship. It's not the closest to Apple's Cupertino campus, but Steve Jobs lived in Palo Alto, and current CEO Tim Cook still does.

In that store, Fernando became the "go-to person for Apple execs, VIP customers, celebrities, and high priority customer service issues, including the Jobs family, Ron Johnson, Scott Forstall?s parents, Guy Kawasaki, and more."

Ron Johnson is Apple's former retail chief, and Guy Kawasaki is a high-profile author and investor who worked at Apple in the early days. Scott Forstall, of course, is the executive whom Cook just dramatically ousted.

There's one other connection Fernando cultivated: He worked for two years at Big Fun Disc Jockeys, a Bay Area company which provides DJs for wedding and other events. Henry Kim, an Apple developer, owns the firm, and an Apple sales trainer, Paul Burchfield, also works as a DJ there.

While at the Apple Store, Fernando also coded inventory and communication systems to make operations more efficient, so he's clearly got technical chops.

In April, he started working at Apple HQ as an iOS sync quality-assurance engineer.

We're reminded of the story of how David Brookings went from giving Elvis tours in Memphis to working on iTunes.

We dropped Fernando a note via LinkedIn to hear more about his career path and we'll update you if we hear back.

Exhaustive family tree for birds shows recent, rapid diversification

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? A Yale-led scientific team has produced the most comprehensive family tree for birds to date, connecting all living bird species -- nearly 10,000 in total -- and revealing surprising new details about their evolutionary history and its geographic context.

Analysis of the family tree shows when and where birds diversified -- and that birds' diversification rate has increased over the last 50 million years, challenging the conventional wisdom of biodiversity experts.

"It's the first time that we have -- for such a large group of species and with such a high degree of confidence -- the full global picture of diversification in time and space," said biologist Walter Jetz of Yale, lead author of the team's research paper, published Oct. 31 online in the journal Nature.

He continued: "The research highlights how heterogeneously fast diversifying species groups are distributed throughout the family tree and over geographic space. Many parts of the globe have seen a variety of species groups diversify rapidly and recently. All this leads to a diversification rate in birds that has been increasing over the past 50 million years."

The researchers relied heavily on fossil and DNA data, combining them with geographical information to produce the exhaustive family tree, which includes 9,993 species known to be alive now.

"The current zeitgeist in biodiversity science is that the world can fill up quickly," says biologist and co-author Arne Mooers of Simon Fraser University in Canada. "A new distinctive group, like bumblebees or tunafish, first evolves, and, if conditions are right, it quickly radiates to produce a large number of species. These species fill up all the available niches, and then there is nowhere to go. Extinction catches up, and things begin to slow down or stall. For birds the pattern is the opposite: Speciation is actually speeding up, not slowing down."

The researchers attribute the growing rate of avian diversity to an abundance of group-specific adaptations. They hypothesize that the evolution of physical or behavioral innovations in certain groups, combined with the opening of new habitats, has enabled repeated bursts of diversification. Another likely factor has been birds' exceptional mobility, researchers said, which time and again has allowed them to colonize new regions and exploit novel ecological opportunities.

In their analysis, the researchers also expose significant geographic differences in diversification rates. They are higher in the Western Hemisphere than in the Eastern, and higher on islands than mainlands. But surprisingly, they said, there is little difference in rates between the tropics and high latitudes. Regions of especially intense recent diversification include northern North American and Eurasia and southern South America.

"This was one of the big surprises," Jetz said. "For a long time biologists have thought that the vast diversity of tropical species must at least partly be due to greater rates of net species production there. For birds we find no support for this, and groups with fast and slow diversification appear to occur there as much as in the high latitudes. Instead, the answer may lie in the tropics' older age, leading to a greater accumulation of species over time. Global phylogenies like ours will allow further tests of this and other basic hypotheses about life on Earth."

Sony goes Redhunting with PMWF55 and PMWF5 pro CineAlta 4K Super 35mm sensor camcorders

Having seen some of its high-end cinema camera thunder stolen by the likes of Red and Arri, Sony has just launched a pair of CineAlta PL-mount cameras with brand new Super 35mm sensors: The PMW-F5 and PMW-F55. Though both pack 4K CMOS imagers, the similarities grind to a halt there -- the higher-end PMW-F55 has a global shutter, wider color gamut and can output 4k along with 2k and HD video, while the PMW-F5 is a strictly 2k and HD model with a rolling shutter. Depending on the level of quality you want, there are several ways to capture video to each camcorder. MPEG-4 H.264 video or Sony's SR MPEG-4 SStP can be recorded onto Sony's new SxS PRO+ media, or if RAW quality is desired, there's the new AXS-R5 Access Memory System for 2K / 4K RAW capture -- which will also work with the current NEX-FS700. Using the latter system, the PMW-F5 is capable of grabbing up to 120fps slow motion RAW HD video, while the PMW-F55 can capture 240fps at 2k, putting it squarely in Epic-X territory. The new camcorders will arrive in February 2013, and while Sony hasn't outed pricing yet, it'll likely be well under the flagship 4k CineAlta F65's formidable $65k sticker. Check the PR after the break to get the entire technical skinny.

(AP) ? Ukraine's parliamentary election was marked by an uneven playing field and biased media coverage that reversed many of the democratic gains the country had made earlier, international observers said Monday.

With Ukraine's top opposition leader, Yulia Tymoshenko, in jail, President Viktor Yanukovych's Party of Regions was poised to retain its control of parliament after Sunday's vote, according to exit polls and preliminary results.

Tymoshenko's party and two other opposition groups, however, made a strong showing and were planning to join forces to challenge Yanukovych's strong grip on power.

Observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe criticized Ukraine for rolling back on democratic freedoms in the vote.

"Considering the abuse of power and the excessive role of money in this election, democratic progress appears to have reversed in Ukraine," said Walburga Habsburg Douglas, the special coordinator who led the OSCE election observation mission.

Observers cited Tymoshenko's absence from the election, the unfair use of government resources by the ruling party and tilted media coverage as the election's main problems.

With votes counted at over 50 percent of polling stations Monday, the Russia-friendly Party of Regions was ahead with 35 percent in the proportional share of the vote, while Tymoshenko's pro-Western party came in second with 22 percent. The Communists, Yanukovych's traditional allies, trailed with 15 percent.

Another pro-Western party called Udar (Punch) led by boxing champion Vitali Klitschko garnered 13 percent and the far-right Svoboda (Freedom) party had 8 percent of the vote.

The West was paying close attention to the vote in the strategic ex-Soviet state of 45 million people, which lies between Russia and the European Union and serves as a key transit nation for Russian energy supplies to many EU countries. An unfair election could lead to a further freeze in Kiev's ties with the West and push it closer to Moscow.

The Party of Regions was also to win more than half of the 225 total seats allocated in individual races, according to early results, meaning the president's team was likely to get a majority of votes in the 450-member parliament.

"This will enable us to form a majority and quickly start implementing the reforms that we started," Deputy Prime Minister Serhiy Tigipko told The Associated Press.

Yanukovych's party strongly benefited from an electoral change it pushed through last year. Under the new law, the strictly proportional electoral system has been changed into a mixed one, in which half of parliament's seats are elected based on party lists and the other half in individual races.

Yanukovych's candidates are stronger in those individual races since the opposition was fielding multiple candidates and the ruling party enjoying greater access to government funds.

However, with Yanukovych under fire over Tymoshenko's imprisonment, rampant corruption, slow reforms and a stagnant economy, the opposition made a strong showing in the proportional vote.

"This clearly shows that the people of Ukraine support the opposition, not the government," Tymoshenko ally Arseniy Yatsenyuk said.

Political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko said Yanukovych's party will likely retain control over parliament but will face a strengthened opposition.

"The Party of Region won by the number of points, but the opposition scored a moral victory," Fesenko said. "The monopoly on power will be harder to maintain."

The showing of the far-right Svoboda party, which had been expected to barely pass the 5 percent vote threshold, emerged as a big surprise.

Svoboda, which campaigns for the preservation of the Ukrainian language and culture and strongly attacks Yanukovych, is also known for xenophobic and anti-Semitic rhetoric. Analysts said the party's popularity was due more to many Ukrainians' anger with the ruling party than vehemently nationalist views.

Top Benefits For Using Blown-In Insulation Products In Your House

The new houses that are being constructed have pretty high standards that must be met for energy efficiency. However, that can?t be said for elderly homes. The simplest way to make an older house a great deal more energy efficient is to use insulation. This may not be straightforward to do with the outer side walls, but can be done easily with blown-in insulation in the attic. The heat retaining material will keep your house warmer during the winter and cooler over the summer. If you reside in a rather old house, you may basically have newspapers in your wall for insulation.

You will notice that insulation technology is amazingly advanced because of our concern for conserving energy and saving the environment. Insulation components have something called an R-value, which is put to use to determine the amount of insulation needed based on what part of the country you live. Very cold locations have to have a considerably higher R-value, than places with moderate temperatures. One of the best products to be identified for cutting down heating costs is blown-in insulation. There are several benefits for using this type of insulation over the standard rolls of fiberglass insulation, such as where it can be used, energy efficiency, and how it is installed.

There are numerous good reasons why blown-in insulation would be the way to go, one of them is that it can easily be adjusted. You have the ability to control the actual R-value for insulation by adjusting the degree of insulation you use. Blow in so many inches to have an R-value of 15, and so much more if you would need an R-value of 38. Another benefit for implementing blown-in, is that the majority of products use virgin materials, that have lowered the chance of allergies. Youll also have a more efficient seal considering that the materials can fill in cracks and crevices. The application is quick, and given that everything is filled in, it is very energy-efficient.

The installation of blown-in insulation is straightforward on a newly framed house. All that is done is staple a netting over the exterior wall studs, then cut a few little holes, stick in the hose, and load up the wall cavity. The insulating product blown in adheres to the studs, and totally fills all of the empty spaces. Afterward you contain the wall with vapor barrier and after that drywall it.? To do attic insulation, you must drywall the ceiling first then go into the attic and blow it in from there. Its tougher with older homes since the wall covering will need to be removed. Once the wall covering is removed, the steps are pretty much exactly the same. If you live in a very old house, you can actually just drill a hole in a wall and blow the insulation in, then cover it up.

?

rogue agent x ?While the preliminary cost is high, it will pay itself in the long run. With lower power costs and a warmer home, using blown-in insulation makes the most sense.

Ancestral Discoveries: Genealogy Served on a Silver Platter

Ever wonder what it would feel like to just be handed all the information on your family?? You know, kind of like what happened on episodes of Who Do You Think You Are? and Finding Your Roots:? family trees, death certificates, photographs, military discharge papers, what have you.? But that never really happens, right?
Meet my friend Carol.

Over the years it has become a running joke between us.? Every so often, a family member contacts her and says, "Oh, I'd like to send you a copy of all the research I've done."? Then she receives another well put together and well documented part of her family tree, often with supporting materials.? She already has several copies of different trees and boxes of original letters and documents from both sides of her family.

She was just given another bonanza.

She received two large envelopes full of documents and a USPS Medium Flat Rate box of photo albums and loose photos.? Most of the photos are even labeled!

Among the documents are:
? eight family trees for various lines
? a typed transcript of her great-uncle interviewing her great-grandmother, including the story of how her family was instrumental in the founding of a town in Iowa
? two copies of a treatise on one of her family names
? two copies of a book about the church her ancestor established in the 1600's
? a photo of her grandfather's high school graduating class from 1917
? her grandfather's entire probate file, including correspondence

? original documents from when a relative legally changed his name
? her grandmother's college diploma and teaching certificate
? an original copy of her grandmother's death certificate from Spain (which probably would have been difficult to replace)
? original U.S. Army discharge papers
? a "whole pile" of family letters
? newspaper clippings
? church bulletins
? visitor books from funeral services

Carol's aunt (her mother's sister) collected all of this information.? She has moved to assisted living, and the aunt's daughter had to clean out the home.? This cousin talked with her brothers and her own children, but no one wanted all of the genealogical stuff.? Rather than just throw everything out, she asked around the family to find someone who did want it (hooray!).? Carol got all of this because, unlike her friend, when these items needed a home, she recognized their value.

Of course, now everything needs to be taken care of -- sorted out, put in archival boxes, separated with nonreactive paper.? And some of this is duplicates of what she already has.? But I know that Carol is up to the task.? Now if she were only more interested in genealogy ....

What was that?? No, of course I'm not jealous.? Whatever made you think so?

Caring For Baby Boomers and Seniors In Their Own Homes

With proper health care, you as a baby boomer or senior could live to be 100 years if age, or older. You can also be instrumental in helping other baby boomers or seniors to live to be a ripe old age in their own homes.

Senior care is becoming a major concern in North America, particularly because there are thousands of seniors and baby boomers in our era. By seniors, I am referring to those over the age of sixty five and by baby boomers, those people who were born after World War 11. It is only a matter of time, before they are seniors too.

The big problem for seniors and baby boomers, lies in the reality that very soon, there are not going to be enough nurses, personal support workers or even family members to care for them, or perhaps for you, if you are a baby boomer heading into retirement.

Hospitalization or nursing home care may not be feasible or possible for the majority of baby boomers and seniors, in spite of the fact that it will be needed by many of them. For many,? it may mean twenty four hour care, seven days per week.

The actual cost of hospitalization and health care is extremely high already and many baby boomers and seniors may not be able to afford the kind of care that they will need.

What can we do to rectify this situation? Everyone of us has baby boomers and seniors in our lives; many of us are in baby boomer status already or beyond that age.

Can baby boomers and seniors be cared for in their own homes? Definitely.

Ten tips for managing baby boomer or senior care at home:

1. Baby boomers and seniors are generally most comfortable in their own homes with their family members and in amongst their own belongings. To take them out of that environment may result in dis-orientation. They are accustomed to the food, temperature, air, etc. and changing any or all of that may result in other, more serious problems. They are used to having people come and go in their lives, as well. This is the world that they know.

2. Safety is a major concern and the majority of baby boomers and seniors feel safe at home. In fact, most of them have already instituted safety precautions for themselves, although this is not always the case. One of the first things that must be taken into consideration is whether or not the baby boomer or senior is safe. If he or she is not safe in the environment, immediate action is necessary on the part of the family or designated care giver.

3. In taking a serious look at health care in the home of baby boomers or seniors, it is always a good idea to do an assessment of the environment in the light of what is currently happening. This can be done quite easily, by spending quality time with the baby boomer and and other family members. Visiting the family doctor with the baby boomer or senior and other family members is generally a good idea. Remember that many of these men and women will have had the same doctor for many years and their doctor may be almost the same age they are. The doctor will likely know the baby boomer or senior well and his or her preferences must be taken into consideration.

4. Remember that the baby boomer or senior in need of care, will have definite ideas about what he or she expects in terms of his or her own health care needs. Many of them may not have had sufficient care in the recent past and will improve immensely when proper health care needs are met. You may be totally amazed at the degree of improvement. They may or may not understand the current changes in the health care system, and you may have to explain them.

5. Dietary needs are especially important, as nutrition is a primary factor in health care. Assess the baby boomer or senior for his or her ability to provide adequate food to sustain his or her health. Many of them? may not have sufficient income to provide for their own dietary requirements. They may need to obtain a supplemental income of some kind. A few may be hoarding their disability or old age pension checks and not using them to meet their needs. Find out who is looking after their finances and work with that family member or other person. If necessary, find or designate a family member to take financial responsibility for them.

6. Assessing medical needs is a huge factor. Many baby boomers or seniors will be in need of wheelchairs, walkers, canes, etc. and have not had anyone help them in this regard. They may need drugs that they cannot afford and will require assistance in that respect. They may require other health care items that can be obtained quite easily. Ask them if they are taking their medications? If not, why not? Where are they obtaining them and are they over-priced? Are they hoarding their medications or using out-dated medications? Have they obtained generic drugs? Do they know what generic drugs are? How are their medications stored? Do they know how to dispose of medications that are outdated or have not been used?

7. Spiritual needs are extremely important to baby boomers and seniors, as the era in which they grew up probably focused on having those needs met. Does he or she have a priest, pastor or chaplain? Is that person aware of what this particular baby boomer or other senior stands in need of at this time in his or her life? Make contact with the person of their choice for seniors, if they are not able to do so.

8. Have plans been made for the baby boomer or senior, should he or she pass away unexpectedly? Is there a 'DNR' (do not resuscitate) order request, signed by the baby boomer or senior, family members and the doctor? Has a will been drawn up? If not, why not? Does he or she have legal counsel? This may prove to be extremely important in the future.

9. Fear and paranoia is a major issue with baby boomers or seniors, as many have had bad experiences previously with others including health care workers, lawyers, doctors, etc. A lot of them have had their homes broken into and things stolen by people who they have trusted, including family members and friends. It is like losing a part of oneself when there is a violation like this in their home. It is not easy to get a person to trust you when they have been violated in some way, by someone else.

10. Health involves healing, happiness and wholeness. You can be instrumental in bringing this into the life of a baby boomer or senior as a minor care giver, a family member, a personal support worker or a nurse. Consider carefully what you can or cannot do and then make a positive, constructive decision with respect to the baby boomer or senior in your life or under your care. Care is important, but quality care is even more important.

Remember that there are those around you who have gone through this before and that you are not alone in caring for your baby boomer or senior. There are many organizations which can be of help, as well. What you do can be instrumental in helping others to live to a ripe old age.

Think about doing some of these things for yourself also, if you are a baby boomer or a senior and you could be among the ones who live to be a hundred years of age or older.

Obesity may be irreversible

?

Only one-third of Canadians admit to being ?very? or ?somewhat? overweight, despite national statistics that indicate the true proportion of overweight Canadians is greater.

Photograph by: TIM SLOAN , AFP/Getty Images

LONDON ? Scientists have discovered that being obese for some time ?flips a switch? that resets normal body weight to be ?irreversibly? higher casting doubt over the success of exercise and diet.

Children are most at risk because if their obesity is not tackled, it may condemn them to a life of being morbidly overweight.

Dr. Malcolm Low, from the University of Michigan, said: ?Somewhere along the way, if obesity is allowed to continue, the body appears to flip a switch that re-programs to a heavier set weight.

?The exact mechanisms that cause this shift are still unknown and require much further study that will help us better understand why the regaining of weight seems almost unavoidable.?

Researchers studied an animal model of obese mice showing that the longer mice remained overweight, the more ?irreversible? obesity became.

The rodents were subjected to a rigorous regime of strict dieting and exercise, but while they initially shed the pounds, they remained fatter than other mice who had never been overfed.

These rodents had learned to reset their ?normal? body weight set point to become permanently higher than their counterparts.

Scientists probed what caused this discrepancy and found they were able to flip a genetic switch in mice that controlled their hunger.

Turning on the switch right after weaning prevented the mice from overeating and ever becoming obese.

And mice that remained at a healthy weight into young adulthood by strict dieting were able to maintain normal weight without dieting after their hunger switch was turned on.

But chronically overfed mice who developed obesity in infancy never returned to normal weight after flipping the switch, even if they dieted and exercised a lot.

Low said the study showed the importance of tackling childhood obesity if lives are to be saved.

?Our model demonstrates that obesity is in part a self-perpetuating disorder and the results further emphasize the importance of early intervention in childhood to try to prevent the condition whose effects can last a lifetime.

?Our new animal model will be useful in pinpointing the reasons why most adults find it exceedingly difficult to maintain meaningful weight loss from dieting and exercise alone.?

Chestnut Hill Condo Law Attorneys | HOA fining residents | Goldman ...

Additional Information:

We live in a 10 unit condominium complex in Chestnut Hill, and the home owners association is fining residents, but there is no statutory authority to do so.? Do we have to pay the fines?? I don?t want to be in ?bad standing? with the HOA. What should we do?

ATTORNEY ANSWER:

The statement in your question that ?there is no statutory authority? for trustees to fine unit owners is incorrect.? M.G.L. c. 183A Sec. 10(b) provides, in material part, that:? ?Such corporation, trust or association shall have, among other powers,? the following rights and powers:?.(3) to?levy reasonable fines for violations of? the master deed, trust, by-laws, restrictions, rules or regulations of the organization of unit owners.?

You do not elaborate in your question about how much the fine is or why it is being levied. Certain types of fines can be treated as ?common expenses? and in order to challenge those fines you must first pay them and then challenge them in a separate legal action.?

If you do not pay the fines, the HOA may bring legal action against you and seek to collect not only the fines, but also its legal fees which often times is much greater than the fines. In addition, the HOA can seek to collect the fine by putting a lien on your condominium and possibly forcing a sale.

My advice would be to pay the fines and if you contend that they were too large or not reasonably levied, you can challenge those fines in a separate court proceeding. Be careful, however, because the cost of challenging the fee may be larger than the fee itself. If that is the case, make sure you attend all trustee and unit owner meetings and give your input.? You could also attempt to become a trustee yourself so that you will have more control over issues involving the condominium, including fines assessed.

The Condominium Law Attorneys? at Goldman & Pease provide legal representation for matters related to condominium and real estate law in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts and the surrounding communities including Needham, Brookline, Dedham, Westwood, Dover,? Wellesley, Weston? and the entire Boston Metrowest region.

Travel Agents Could Become Obsolete - Business Insider

Airlines are testing out a new ticket initiative to compete with websites, which could go in effect by 2016.?

The plan, in which airlines solicit info to create a personalized ticket with bundled in items like bag-check and meals, could signal the demise of travel agents as well.

According to The Flight Deal, a blog that tracks fares, "travel agents now depend on selling airfare as a means of upselling additional products like hotels where commissions still exist."

But these days, "consumers do not need travel agents for the traditional tonnage business of booking simple itineraries as airline websites and online travel agencies have filled that need."?

With the advent of personalized tickets, consumers might not see a need for agents at all.?

"Their business will suffer greatly," predicts Flight Deal, "unless they can move up the value chain. They need to be true value adds like the Virtuoso agent network, which provides booking for high-end, customized experiences where the agent's knowledge trumps the technology."

However, they shouldn't write off these bricks-and-mortar agents just yet as they're still useful for booking certain kinds of trips. As U.S. News' Daniel Bortz has?pointed out, travel agents come equipped with a deep Rolodex of sales associates and bookers, first-hand experience from their own personal travels, and knowledge of an area or service that can be tougher to find online if it's relatively niche or in a small country.?

"You'll pay a fee to have a travel agent do something," says Brett Snyder, an expert who blogs at The Cranky Flier, but "they generally focus on tours, land packages and things where they can actually make a living."

However, if these services fall by the wayside, consumers risk losing out on one of the best ways to find cheap fares to certain countries, learn about its culture from people who may have lived there and possibly receive better service than they'd get from an online booking agent. As The New York Times' Seth Kugel found out, travel agents beat sites on all counts.?

High school football: Vancleave hosts Poplarville with playoff spot on line

VANCLEAVE ?--?The playoff formula isn't complicated for the Vancleave Bulldogs --?win and keep playing, lose and stay home.

The Bulldogs (3-5, 1-3 in 4A Region 8) play their final regular-season game at 7 p.m. Friday, hosting Poplarville (3-6, 1-3) at Vancleave Stadium. The winner of the game clinches the fourth playoff spot in the region and travels to face Region 5 champion Quitman to open the postseason on Nov. 2.

"A lot of teams would love to be in the position we're in -- to be fighting for a playoff spot going into the last game," Vancleave coach Jim Bloomfield said. "It would mean a lot to our program and to our seniors and our coaches to win this game. We're banged up in a lot of spots, but this is the time of year where character has to rise. We need to play hungry, hungrier than we have been playing."

Vancleave has lost three straight games since opening region play by beating St. Stanislaus 39-32. The Bulldogs have been outscored by Forrest County, Bay and Greene County 125-46 in that span and are allowing 36.8 points per game for the season.

Vancleave averages 242 yards per game rushing, led by junior quarterback Terren Crowley (859 yards, 7 touchdowns) and sophomore fullback Marlon Warren (450 yards, 6 TDs). The Bulldogs have been less steady throwing the ball, with Crowley completing just 41 percent of his passes with a 10-7 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

"We haven't played as well on defense as we've wanted to, but our offense hasn't been able to keep our defense off the field," Bloomfield said. "So it's been a double whammy. When you're going three-and-out too much, it doesn't allow your defense to rest."

Poplarville has also lost to Forrest County, Bay and Greene County, by a combined 163-56. The Hornets' lone region win was a wild one, an 82-80 defeat of St. Stanislaus on Oct. 12.

Halfback Jiquan James rushed for 401 yards and five touchdowns in that game and has 824 yards and eight scores for the season, but isn't even Poplarville's second-leading rusher -- let alone its top backfield threat. Fullback Rojae Raine has 951 and 12 TDs, while halfback Malik Lucas has 884 and 11.

"We watched the St. Stanislaus film and it was just unbelievable," Bloomfield said. "It was scary to watch. You have to wonder if the offense was really that good or the defense was that bad. But Poplarville has been able to run the ball on everybody they've played. They're tough to stop out of that Wing-T attack, and it's going to be up to us to limit them on first and second down and get them in some passing situations."

Also in the region Friday, Bay hosts Forrest County in a battle for the region title. Greene County, which travels to St. Stanislaus, is already assured of third place in the region and its 14th straight playoff berth.

Laurel and Northeast Jones meet Friday for second place in 4A Region 5. The winner will host Greene County in Round 1 of the playoffs, while the loser will travel to the Bay-Forrest County loser.

The Bay-Forrest County winner will likely host Northeast Lauderdale, which can clinch fourth place in Region 5 by beating last-place West Lauderdale on Friday. Should Northeast lose that game, Newton County could claim the No. 4 spot if it beats Quitman.

Nokia Lumia 920T Officially Confirmed at China Mobile

As expected, China Mobile officially confirmed it would carry the Nokia Lumia 920. The smartphone is expected to go on sale in November for 4888 yuan (780 USD or 600 EUR) and 5888 yuan (940 USD or 720 EUR), depending on the model.

Chinese blog site winp.cn reports the smartphone will be fully compatible with its TD-SCDMA (3G), GSM (2G) and TD-LTE (4G) networks.

The world?s largest carrier, China Mobile won?t be the only one to offer Nokia?s Windows Phone 8 devices in the Mainland.

We?re still waiting for China Telecom and China Unicom to make their move, though it?s almost certain each will carry their own carrier-bounded Lumia devices.

All in all, China Mobile?s Lumia 920T will come packed with a powerful 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon processor built on Krait architecture, an Adreno 225 graphics processing unit and 1 GB of RAM.

The smartphone embeds 32GB of internal memory, though it lacks microSD card slot for memory expansion. It is also worth mentioning that owners will also receive 7GB of free cloud storage via SkyDrive.

Another strong point of the Lumia 920T is the superb 4.5-inch IPS PureMotion HD+ capacitive touchscreen display, which is said to be the fastest and most sensitive screen even included onto a smartphone.

Nokia Lumia 920T?s display supports 768 x 1280 pixels resolution and features Corning Gorilla Glass 2 coating for extra protection.

The 8-megapixel rear camera features PureView technology and Carl Zeiss optics, which makes it one of the best on the market.

Moreover, the camera offers autofocus, dual-LED flash and full HD (1080p) video recording. There?s also a secondary 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video calls.

The Lumia 920T drains energy from a 2000 mAh Li-Ion battery, which should provide users with up to 400 hours of standby time or up to 17 hours of talk time (10 hours in 3G mode).

Schieffer?s ?Obama bin Laden? gaffe unfortunate, but not unusual

While prefacing a question for Mitt Romney about Pakistan during Monday's presidential debate on foreign policy, moderator Bob Schieffer had an unfortunate slip of the tongue, referring to Osama bin Laden as "Obama bin Laden."

"We know that Pakistan has helped us arrest the doctor that helped us catch Obama-uh-bin Laden," Schieffer said, seeming to realize his mistake immediately.

The host of CBS' "Face The Nation" quickly recovered: "It still provides safe haven for terrorists, yet we continue to give Pakistan millions of dollars. Is it time for us to divorce Pakistan?"

Schieffer's flub was notable because of the stage--a presidential debate--but certainly not novel.

During coverage of the al Qaeda leader's death in 2011, many members of the media made the same mistake. MSNBC's Keith Olbermann and Norah O'Donnell, CBS' Mark Knoller, Fox News' Geraldo Rivera and local Fox affiliates were among those who fell victim to the Osama-Obama curse in the immediate aftermath of the bin Laden's killing:

ABC News ran a scroll on its website declaring "Obama Bin Laden Dead." Diane Sawyer's "World News" blog reported that "OBAMA WILL BE BURIED AT SEA."

Geraldo Rivera said "Obama is dead" on Fox News before correcting himself.

An anchor for Fox's Sacramento affiliate declared on air: "President Obama speaking from the East Room of the White House, telling the nation and the world President Obama is, in fact, dead."

After mocking Fox for that error, Keith Olbermann tweeted, "Mr. Bush personally de-prioritized the hunt for Obama."
