Can you invest in Middle East peace?

There are ways to invest in the economies of Israel and the Palestinian territories, separately ? and women's progress in the Middle East, indirectly. But investing in the Middle East is not for the faint of heart.

By G. Jeffrey MacDonald,?Correspondent / December 24, 2012

Palestinian carpenters carve wooden statues of the Virgin Mary and Jesus in a workshop, ahead of Christmas in the West Bank town of Bethlehem on Friday. Investors can buy stocks or help microfinance Palestinian entrepreneurs ? or buy Israeli bonds or stocks or shares of an Israeli mutual fund.

As winds of change sweep the Middle East, brave investors are exploring how capital might help encourage reforms.

They're discovering a landscape dotted with unique risks and niche opportunities: ways to invest in Israel, the Palestinian territories, and even in the hiring and promoting of women (although not specifically focused on that area of the world). The questions for individual investors: What's my vision for progress in the Middle East? Do I have the wherewithal and risk tolerance to invest?

"The Middle East is really hard to work in, and has all sorts of risks," says Jim Pickup of the Middle East Investment Initiative, a nonprofit in Washington that aims to boost business financing in the Palestinian territories. "To get a social return as well as a risk-adjusted return has been a real challenge."

Some agendas are easier to support through investing than others. Pro-Israel holdings are the most accessible to Westerners. Bonds to pay for Israeli infrastructure projects, such as expanded ports, are available with a few clicks at israelbonds.com. Also, there's Timothy Israel Common Values Fund, a year-old mutual fund weighted toward Israel's strongest sectors, such as technology and health care, as well as real estate.

Investors in the fund "bless ... the only real ally we [Americans] have in the Middle East," the fund says. But it's not for the faint of heart. Israel-focused funds "tend to be risky [since] Israel is inextricably tied to geopolitics in the region," says David Kathman, a Morningstar analyst. By mid-December, the fund was up 8 percent versus its benchmark (up 13.7 percent) and its category (up 18.7 percent).

Providing direct investment for Palestinians is harder since their economy is less developed than Israel's. Institutional investors have put money into private equity funds and venture capital projects, which require more cash than ordinary investors usually have. But opportunities exist.

Microfinance through FATEN (Palestine for Credit & Development) offers an avenue for Americans to support small businesses in the West Bank and Gaza, according to John Wimberly, co-moderator of Presbyterians for Middle East Peace, a grass-roots group working to advance regional peace by supporting the Palestinian economy. This year, the United Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church (USA) joined other denominations in committing assets to that effort. FATEN is accessible through its partner, Kiva, where investors earn 8.3 percent by bankrolling Palestinian entrepreneurs.

Another option: The Palestine Exchange (PEX) in Nablus is accessible to individuals online at www.pex.ps or through brokers who are PEX members. PEX attracts more than $31 million in US investment, including $8.6 million from retail investors. One option for socially conscious investors: Buy big banks, such as the Bank of Palestine, whose lending helps juice the entire economy. But Mr. Pickup notes a possible downside: Banks have ties to the Palestinian Authority, a turnoff to some.

For those keen to promote women's status in Middle Eastern countries, options tend to center on encouraging what's already working. The Pax World Global Women's Equality Fund has 3.5 percent of its holdings in the Middle East, specifically Israel and Turkey. This shows how empowering women to be workplace leaders ? in the Middle East and elsewhere ? is good for the bottom line, says Julie Gorte, a senior vice president at Pax World.

Memorial service for Sen. Inouye held in Hawaii

HONOLULU (AP) ? The late Sen. Daniel Inouye was remembered Sunday as an American hero whose legacy as a war veteran and longtime senator would be felt across Hawaii for years to come.

The memorial service at Honolulu's National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific was attended by about 1,000 people, including President Barack Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Hawaii's congressional delegation and a number of other senators, cabinet secretaries and other dignitaries.

"Daniel was the best senator among us all," Reid told those assembled, adding later: "Whenever we needed a noble man to lean on, we turned to Sen. Dan Inouye. He was fearless."

The cemetery, a strikingly beautiful site located in an extinct volcano, is the final resting place to thousands of World War II veterans. More than 400 members of the storied Japanese-American 442nd Regimental Combat Team ? of which Inouye was a part ? are buried at the site.

Adm. Samuel Locklear, commander of the Navy's U.S. Pacific Command, said this also will be Inouye's final resting place.

"We have lost an irreplaceable American," he said.

Several 442nd veterans attended the Sunday morning service, the latest in a number of tributes and honors for Inouye following the 88-year-old's Dec. 17 death from respiratory complications.

Buses that brought people to the service flashed the words "MAHALO Senator Daniel K. Inouye" ? using the Hawaiian word for thank you.

A 19-gun cannon salute was fired as Inouye's coffin arrived at the cemetery. The service also featured a flyover by F-22 military jets and the playing of "Taps" by Democratic Sen. Jon Tester of Montana.

Inouye's widow, Irene, who was seated with the president and first lady Michelle Obama in the front row, dabbed her eyes as a band of bagpipes and drums band played "Danny Boy."

Inouye was the first Japanese-American elected to both houses of Congress and the second-longest serving senator in U.S. history, at 50 years.

He was a high school senior in Honolulu on Dec. 7, 1941, when he watched dozens of Japanese planes fly toward Pearl Harbor and other Oahu military bases to begin a bombing that changed the course of world events.

He volunteered for a special U.S. Army unit of Japanese-Americans and lost his right arm in a battle with Germans in Italy. That scratched his dream of becoming a surgeon and he went to law school and into politics instead.

"He was a shining star of the greatest generation," fellow Hawaii Democratic Sen. Daniel Akaka said at the service.

Akaka, who served with Inouye for 36 years, also highlighted Inouye's role in steering federal money to build roads, schools, housing and other infrastructure in Hawaii over the decades, from the beginning of statehood.

"Dan Inouye is Hawaii, and Hawaii is Dan Inouye," Akaka said.

Inouye's chief of staff, Jennifer Sabas, said Inouye was calm, in control and giving out instructions until the very end. Then, "he penned 'aloha,' and went on to a better place," she said.

"Aloha, boss," she said in closing, as she stood beside his flag-draped coffin.

Several services have already been held in Washington and in Hawaii for Inouye. He lay in state at both the U.S. Capitol Rotunda on Thursday and the Hawaii state Capitol on Saturday. A public service is planned for Friday on Kauai. His burial is expected to be a private, family event.

Obama eulogized Inouye during a service at Washington's National Cathedral on Friday, saying that Inouye's presence during the Watergate hearings helped show him what could be possible in his own life.

The president arrived early Saturday in Honolulu for his annual Christmas family vacation. He made a brief visit to the grave of his grandfather, World War II veteran Stanley Dunham, after Sunday's service.

The ultimate guide to different types of showers - Home ...

This blog post will provide all the information you need about the different types of shower. The three main types are electric, power and mixer showers. But how do they differ from each other? Well, this blog will explain?

Electric showers

mira-electricThese showers heat cold water on demand by passing it over a built in heating element. Electric showers vary in kilowatts (kW), the higher the kW rating the quicker the shower will heat the water. For higher temperatures, water is held over the heating element for longer, and with the higher powered showers the water doesn?t need to be held as long in order to get it to the required temperature.

The water supply for an electric shower is fed from your cold water mains supply. This means that the water pressure will only be that of your mains water. As a result of this, there is little point installing an electric shower with a higher flow rate than that of your incoming water mains.

For safety, the minimum fuse size required for each kilowatt (kW) rating is listed below. This is based on a 240V electrical supply.

  • 8.5kW ? 40 Amp supply fuse
  • 9.5kW ? 40 Amp supply fuse
  • 10.5kW ? 45/50 Amp supply fuse

The size of the cable supplying the shower would need to be of sufficient size. A qualified electrician would need to investigate the matter to make sure the installation complies with British Standard 7671.

We highly recommend that you purchase a limescale reducer and fit it in line on the water mains to reduce the effects of limescale. Limescale does drastically reduce the lifespan on an electric shower, so doing everything you can to prevent this is important.

All electric showers need to be installed by a Part P qualified electrician as they require an electrical mains feed into the bathroom.

Mixer showers

Mixer showers mix hot and cold water together to create a shower temperature to suit you. The cold water comes directly from your cold water mains and the hot water comes from your heating system ? so this could be directly from a combi boiler or from a hot water tank.

The mixer?s valve blends the two water sources together to reach the required temperatured that you?ve defined on the mixer shower.

It?s important to buy a mixer shower that is correct for your property?s water system. Alas it?s not quite as simple as an electric shower, which is quite a universal appliance. You need to make sure the mixer shower is compatible with your hot water system. There are a few universal mixer showers available, however these may not work as well as a system specific model.

A lot of modern mixer showers are thermostatic. A thermostatic mixer shower will automatically regulate the temperature of the water, ensuring that there is a constant temperature in the event of the water temperature suddenly changing. Apart from obvious comfort benefits, there are also safety benefits by having a thermostatic valve. If the cold water supply were to decrease in flow rate during a shower, this could mean that the water from the shower sudden gets a lot hotter ? potentially scalding you. A thermostatic valve would detect this increase in temperature and decrease the flow of hot water to compensate.

A big plus for mixer showers is that they look great, even the cheaper models! Most of them come in chrome, which can complete the look of any bathroom. You can also have the option of a concealed or exposed mixer. A concealed mixer will be built into the wall, disguising the pipes and valve itself, whereas an exposed mixer will be attached onto the wall with everything on display.

triton-mixer-shower

Left: Concealed mixer shower. Right: Exposed mixer shower

?

Even though concealed mixers may be trickier to install, they look a lot more minimalist and can save space in smaller shower enclosures.

Power shower

A power shower is intended for properties where the water pressure to the bathroom isn?t great. Often this is caused by the drop from the water tank not being sufficient, so instead of moving the tank your main option is to install a shower pump.

stuart turner power shower pumpThere are a few different configurations for power showers.

  • The pump can be built into the wall with the mixer, with the pump placed between the mixer and the shower head
  • The pump can also be placed between the water tank and the mixer
  • The best way is for the pump to be placed after the water tank and routed to the entire house, increasing the flow rate of all the taps and of course the shower. This is the best way as it can be used with a multiple number of showers and shower types.

Power showers are not compatible with combi boilers as they require a water source from both hot and cold water tanks.

A big downside to power showers is that your water usage is likely to increase quite considerably, which will in turn boost the cost of your water bill if your property is metered. It?s best to purchase a large water tank, as a general rule you should have at least a 50 gallon tank per bathroom.

On top of that you will need to ensure the drainage of the bath or shower enclosure is efficient enough to cope with the increase water flow. It?s best to consult a plumber before committing to having a power shower installed.

Even though power showers are more expensive and costly to run, they give by far the best showering experience.

Norquist: Obama, Dems using Newtown for 'political purposes'

National Rifle Association board member and president of Americans for Tax Reform Grover Norquist said on Sunday that President Obama and Democrats are politicizing the Newtown tragedy by pushing for gun control.

"We ought to calm down and not take tragedies like this, crimes like this, and use them for political purposes," Norquist told me on "This Week." "President Obama has been president for four years. If he thought some gun control could solve this problem, he should have been pushing it years ago."

"Democrats had a majority in the House and a supermajority in the House and the Senate for the first two years that they were in office. If they thought that this was really an important issue they might have done something then. They didn't," he added.

Read a full transcript of this week's show HERE.

On Wednesday, Obama announced that Vice President Joe Biden would head a task force of leaders from across the country to evaluate solutions to reduce gun violence.

Norquist endorsed the recommendation made by NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre at a press conference on Friday to place armed guards in schools across the country.

Other members of the political roundtable pushed for what they called "common sense" gun laws.

Newark, N.J. Mayor Cory Booker, who is a member of the pro-gun control group Mayors Against Illegal Guns, said that there is more agreement than disagreement on measures to stop the mentally ill and criminals from acquiring weapons.

"I don't know if anybody here has seen somebody shot - I have," Booker said. "I don't know if anybody here has had to put their hand in somebody's chest, and try to stop the bleeding so that person doesn't die-I have. What frustrates me about this debate is that it is a false debate."

"Most of us in America including gun owners agree on things that would stop the kind of carnage that is going on in cities all across America," Booker said, adding that loopholes that allow criminals to buy guns in "secondary markets" should be closed.

Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan said that LaPierre's suggestion that the effect of a violent culture on the mentally ill has contributed to increased gun violence, but she believes that Congress should pursue some gun control measures.

"I am for the banning of the extended magazines and extended clips," Noonan said.

Editor and Publisher of The Nation Katrina vanden Heuvel said that focusing on the mentally ill is a distraction from the issue of gun violence.

"The mental illness argument has been used to evade action," vanden Huevel said. "More guns and bullets, more dead children."

Judge OKs settlement in BP class action suit

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? A federal judge has given final approval to BP's settlement with businesses and individuals who lost money because of the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

BP PLC has estimated it will pay $7.8 billion to resolve economic and medical claims from more than 100,000 businesses and individuals hurt by the nation's worst offshore oil spill. The settlement has no cap; the company could end up paying more or less.

U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier, who gave his preliminary approval in May, made it final in a 125-page ruling released Friday evening.

"None of the objections, whether filed on the objections docket or elsewhere, have shown the Settlement to be anything other than fair, reasonable, and adequate," he wrote.

BP and attorneys for the plaintiffs said they were pleased.

"We believe the settlement, which avoids years of lengthy litigation, is good for the people, businesses and communities of the Gulf and is in the best interests of BP's stakeholders," company spokesman Scott Dean said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press. "Today's decision by the Court is another important step forward for BP in meeting its commitment to economic and environmental restoration efforts in the Gulf and in eliminating legal risk facing the company."

A statement from plaintiffs' attorneys Steve Herman and Jim Roy praised the settlement program's administrator, Pat Juneau.

"This settlement has ? and will continue to ? bring the people and businesses of the Gulf the relief they deserve," the attorneys wrote.

The April 2010 blowout of BP's Macondo well triggered an explosion that killed 11 rig workers and spilled more than 200 million gallons of oil into the Gulf, closing much of it for months to commercial and recreational fishing and shrimping.

There is still a lot of litigation left, including a trial to identify the causes of BP's blowout and assign percentages of fault to the companies involved, Barbier wrote. That trial is scheduled next year.

"This is a positive development, but my focus remains on holding BP and the other defendants accountable for the extraordinary economic and environmental damage inflicted on Alabama," said Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange in a statement. "I look forward to going to trial in February."

Barbier said the settlement averts worries that litigation could continue for 15 to 20 years, as it did after the Exxon Valdez and Amoco Cadiz oil spills, creating a secondary disaster for those affected.

Barbier has not ruled on a medical settlement for cleanup workers and others who say exposure to oil or dispersants made them sick.

The agreement covers people and businesses in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and some coastal counties in eastern Texas and western Florida, and in adjacent Gulf waters and bays.

BP has already begun paying claims before the law required it, and is doing so "in an impressive fashion," Barbier wrote. He said the claims center processed 4,500 claims a week in November and has authorized nearly $1.4 billion in payments, and BP also has paid about $405 million on nearly 16,000 claims during a transitional process that ended June 4.

Barbier noted that lawyers' fees won't come out of settlements: BP has agreed to pay them separately.

As part of the settlement, BP will pay $2.3 billion to cover seafood-related claims by commercial fishing vessel owners, captains and deckhands. That fund is the settlement's only limit, Barbier wrote. He said that it is about five times the average industry gross revenue from 2007 to 2009 and, according to evidence provided, more than 19 times the revenue the industry lost in 2010.

After Barbier's preliminary approval in May, thousands of people opted out of the settlement to pursue their cases individually. More than 1,700 changed their minds and asked to be added back in by a Dec. 15 deadline, Barbier said.

Still unresolved are environmental damage claims brought by the federal government and Gulf Coast states against BP and its partners on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, and claims against Switzerland-based rig owner Transocean Ltd. and Houston-based cement contractor Halliburton.

BP also has paid or agreed to pay settlements of:

?a record $4.5 billion in criminal penalties, including $1.3 million in fines. U.S District Judge Sarah Vance has scheduled a Jan. 29 hearing to accept or reject that plea agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice, which also includes guilty pleas to criminal charges involving the workers' deaths and to lying about the amount of oil spilled from the blown-out well.

?$525 million to the Securities and Exchange Commission, which accused it of misleading investors by lowballing the size of the spill.

#26Acts of kindness: Third-graders rack up 115 good deeds

Susan Garcia

A third-grader at Thomas L. Hatchett, Sr. Elementary School in San Antonio, Texas wrote this message about the value of performing acts of kindness for others.

By Laura T. Coffey, TODAY

After covering the tragedy in Newtown, Conn., NBC News? Ann Curry wondered what could be done to ease the national suffering over the loss of 26 children and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary. Why not, she tweeted, commit to doing one act of kindness for every child killed there? People responded???and wanted to up that to 26 acts of kindness for every child and adult lost at the school. Now people around the country are committing random acts of kindness ??connected?through the hashtag #26Acts?(#20Acts and others are also trending). Get inspired: You can start your own acts of kindness right now.

Like many school teachers across the country, Susan Garcia was nervous. On the Monday after the unthinkable school massacre in Connecticut, how would she handle the inevitable tears and questions from her third-grade students? What could she possibly say?

Then she saw a tweet from NBC News? Ann Curry. The tweet mentioned the idea of doing 26 acts of kindness in response to the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Garcia thought, ?That?s it!?

?I knew this could be a way to spread positivity at our school and honor those victims,? said Garcia, 44, a teacher at Thomas L. Hatchett, Sr. Elementary School in San Antonio, Texas.

She sat down with her 8- and 9-year-old pupils on Monday and floated the idea of doing random acts of kindness throughout the week.

?They ran with it,? Garcia said. ?They are SO excited.?

The kids enthusiastically began dreaming up thoughtful deeds they could do for teachers, students, school administrators, custodians, parents, siblings and others. Their ideas included:

  • Give someone a hug.
  • Give someone a smile.
  • Meet someone new at recess and play together.
  • Make Christmas cards for parents, teachers, custodians and others.
  • Pick up some trash.
  • Take someone?s tray for them at lunch.

Inspired by Curry?s original tweet, Garcia did some sleuth work online to find ways to make the random acts of kindness concept resonate with 8- and 9-year-olds. She found ideas on Pinterest and on the blog 3rdGradeThoughts.com, which ran a post about orchestrating Random Acts of Classroom Kindness at school and having students log their kind deeds on Random Acts of Classroom Kindness, or ?RACK,? sheets.

Susan Garcia

Third-graders filled out "RACK sheets" like this one and logged their kind deeds throughout the week.

By the end of this week, Garcia?s class collectively completed 115 acts of kindness.

?They want to keep doing this in January after we come back from (winter) break,? Garcia said. ?I told them, ?We don?t have to stop! We can definitely keep doing it if we want!?

?We were all so shocked and devastated by what happened. This has been a way to turn it into a positive.?

Related stories:

There are many questions about Friday's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, but one being asked by just about everyone is how to best honor the victims. In Newtown and across the country, random acts of kindness are being performed in the memory of each person lost. NBC's Andrea Canning reports.

Guilt-free iPad apps for kids give parents a holiday break

5 hrs.

I love playing with?my kids, but you know?that week when everybody's stuck in the house, when the?weather's at its worst? Or when you're en route to Grandma's, but stuck?on the tarmac with a 4-hour delay??Well, let's say the iPad comes in handy quite a lot. Trouble is, you don't want your kids just sitting there dulling their minds, and?hunting for good stuff in Apple's App Store is a pain. Here are apps we've tested, that have already met with the?approval of?me ? and my youngins.

Disney Deluxe?Storybooks?-?$6.99 -?I gotta say, these started out pretty?well and have come a long way. When you turn the pages, the faux painted scenes move and zoom, almost like they're?coming to life. Every so often there are diversions ? coloring pages, puzzles and story-specific games. In "Brave," there's an archery challenge; in the brand?new "Monsters, Inc." book, there's a?scarer training module. Some of the Disney books are on sale for $2.99?now: "Tangled,""Brave,""Cars 2" and "Finding Nemo."?iTunes link

Super Why ABC Adventures: Alphabet for iPad - $2.99 -?The PBS Kids sensation has a few iOS titles out.?This latest focuses on letters and basic spelling. What's good about it is that, with five activities tied to the five main characters, a kid can keep playing without risk of getting bored or stuck in a track he or she doesn't like. iTunes link

Scholastic?First Discovery -?The Forest?for iPad?- $1.99 -?Scholastic's simple but aesthetically pleasing walk through the woods is a good example of tricking kids into learning by getting their hands moving. Budding flowers, blowing leaves,?precocious?bunnies and?falling snow ? these?interactive elements combine to teach kids about seasons, plant and animal varieties and environmental concerns.?iTunes link

Little Fox Music Box?- Kids songs?- $2.99 -?Aimed at a toddler audience, this sing-a-long app from Germany?is totally?zany. It features much of the herky-jerky papercraft animation featured in the beloved "Nighty Night" (now in a "Winter Special" edition), and creates three very distinct worlds to accompany "London Bridge," "Old MacDonald" and "Evening Song." There's also a free play mode ? "Fox Studio" ??for making chaotically joyful noises of your own. iTunes link

Toca Band - $0.99 - Underneath its interface, Toca Band is a primitive audio?sequencer, with loops and beats that let you create unique jams. But on its surface, it's a goofy cartoon stage that kids can immerse themselves in before they realize they're making music. My only wish was that there was a record mode to preserve the best tracks. But hey, it's 99 cents ? actually, FREE right now, possibly as a limited-time offer ? so?I am not really complaining. iTunes link

PFT: Hall says ref threat accusations are false

robparker

ESPN has announced that Rob Parker will be allowed to return to the air after a 30-day suspension for questioning whether Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is authentically black because, among other things, Griffin has a white fiancee.

Marcia Keegan, a Vice President of Production for ESPN, released a statement announcing the duration of Parker?s suspension and vowing that ESPN will take greater care in the way its debates on the show Parker appears on, First Take, are presented going forward.

?ESPN has decided to suspend Rob Parker for 30 days for his comments made on last Thursday?s episode of First Take,? Keegan said. ?Our review of the preparation for the show and the re-air has established that mistakes both in judgment and communication were made. As a direct result, clearly inappropriate content was aired and then re-aired without editing. Both were errors on our part. To address this, we have enhanced the editorial oversight of the show and have taken appropriate disciplinary measures with the personnel responsible for these failures. We will continue to discuss important issues in sports on First Take, including race. Debate is an integral part of sports and we will continue to engage in it on First Take. However, we believe what we have learned here and the steps we have taken will help us do all that better.?

ESPN did not specify what the ?appropriate disciplinary measures? were for people other than Parker, or who ?the personnel responsible? were other than Parker. But Parker?s suspension is, frankly, ridiculous when compared to other discipline that ESPN has handed out to other employees.

Most notably, a 30-day suspension is the same punishment ESPN gave SportsCenter anchor Max Bretos for asking an NBA analyst this question about Jeremy Lin: ?If there?s a chink in the armor, where can Lin improve his game??

That may have been an unfortunate choice of words, but no one seriously believed that Bretos was attempting to use a racial slur in that question. People who know Bretos, including his Asian-American SportsCenter co-anchor Michael Kim, insisted that Bretos (whose wife is Asian) is a good man who has far too much respect for his audience and the athletes he covers to dream of using a racial slur on the air.

Parker, on the other hand, is widely known as a provocateur who would rather engage in personal attacks than honest debate. Before ESPN hired Parker, he had twice been disciplined by his previous employer, the Detroit News: Once for asking former Lions coach Rod Marinelli an insensitive question about his daughter?s marriage to the Lions? then-defensive coordinator, and once for erroneously reporting that then-Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins (now Griffin?s backup on the Redskins) had assaulted someone on campus.

Think about what ESPN is doing by giving Parker and Bretos equivalent punishments. ESPN is saying that opposing interracial marriage is no worse than making an unfortunate slip of the tongue. ESPN is saying that Parker, who worked his way up to a job at ESPN by doing everything the wrong way in journalism, deserves no more punishment for a blatantly racist statement than Bretos, who worked his way up to a job at ESPN by being a consummate professional, deserves for an innocent mistake. (It?s also worth noting that when Bretos was alerted to the fact that some people were offended by his word choice, he profusely apologized. When people told Parker on Twitter that they were offended by his racist comments about Griffin, Parker told those people they were ?uneducated? and ?silly.?)

None of that matters to ESPN, however, because First Take gets pretty good ratings on weekday mornings, and the show garners attention by putting panelists on the air to make outrageous statements. ESPN covets those ratings enough that it?s willing to do anything for them. Even put a panelist on the air who will attack a black man for falling in love with a white woman.

Path 29 update introduces contextualized, personalized search update now with video

Many of us enjoy looking through our social network history to reflect on shared memories, and Path is helping users do just that with its latest 2.9 update. Adding a comprehensive search feature that uses metadata in addition to user-defined tags, searching "Photos from Thanksgiving" pulls relevant images even if they didn't have those words in the post. The same concept applies to different days and times, like "sunset" or "weekend brunch." Other contextual categories include friends, places, seasons and the weather. There's also a "Nearby" function that taps into your phone's GPS for moments captured in your immediate vicinity.

One particular search that impressed us during a hands-on briefing is the ability to search for "emotions." Similar to the "like" feature in Facebook, Path lets users mark a post with one of five emoticons (smile, frown, laugh, gasp or heart). With the 2.9 update, you can search for all the posts that received a particular emoticon ("funny" searches all the laugh-tagged posts for example). As a little easter egg, if you search for "royal flush," you'll bring up the posts that have received at least one of each emoticon. It's more amusing than useful, but we found it cute nonetheless. The search feature is only in English to start, but the company is planning on additional language support in the future. Check after the break for more screens, or hit the links below to grab the latest version of Path from Google Play and iTunes.

The Benefits (Gifts) of Caregiving - Assisted Living Today

As Baby Boomers age, they might be setting their sights on retirement, travel, taking up that old hobby or starting a new one. Instead, many of them find themselves as the primary family caregiver for elderly parents, taking on management finances and routine of medication dispensing when they expected to be stepping away from routine and responsibility. Today, the National Alliance for Caregiving estimates that 65 million people in the U.S. are unpaid family caregivers, seven in 10 caring for a person older than themselves.

Yes, becoming a caregiver has re-routed many plans. There are many reasons people accept the challenging job, sometimes out of a sense of duty or obligation to ?do what?s right? by their loved ones. As the cost of services rise, some are financially obligated to take on the lion?s share of the responsibility. Some are fulfilling a promise made to a loved one and others? recognize that their mom or dad responds better to their care, and therefore has higher sense of well-being because he or she is looked after by a family member.

Eldercare: Redefining Families

There are certainly physical and emotional impacts on a family caregiver. Caregivers often get less sleep because of being up in the night or adhering to round-the-clock medication schedules, and they are often required to lift a person who is bedridden or help him into and out of the bath. Caregiving also takes an emotional toll, ranging from anger at being the one to shoulder the burden to anxiety, isolation, exhaustion and then guilt, for having the feelings in the first place.

But this post is about benefits of caregiving, because despite the hardships, stepping up and caring for your elder can give you gifts.

Get to know your parents better. As children, the world revolves around us; as teenagers, we are the world; as young adults we explore the world; and often as adults we?ve turned into parents and we are someone else?s world. When you?re caring for your parent, you are afforded time to sit and listen and share a world.

Quality time is at hand. On one hand, you may feel isolated, not being able to run to the store whenever you need to or take a friend up on lunch. On the other hand, when you slow the pace from breakneck speed to a crawl, there are card games to be played, newspapers to discuss, recipes to share.

Story sharing preserves family history. Now is a good time to record stories from the past. If eyesight is bad, but memory is good, talking about days past may be just what your elder needs. At the same time, you get a chance to learn about your history.writingstories

Giving back love. They kissed scraped knees, reinforced why you?re grounded (again) to hopefully teach lessons, cooked meals, endured nights in a tent, hosted sleepovers and vacuumed up the resulting popcorn, celebrated when you mastered the potty. Caring for elderly parents gives you a chance to return that love and care.

Supervising the family funds. Managing your parents? finances puts you in the loop. Whether you work with a financial planner or do it on your own, you have the opportunity to talk about finances and have a true idea of the financial picture.

Draw the family together. The world is not perfect, and siblings may fight over how mom and dad are cared for, where the money goes, and why isn?t our youngest brother helping? But often having a reason to come together opens doors for more communication between siblings who have drifted apart or simply haven?t made time to talk.

One writer recalls in her compelling story of stepping up to be the ?Good Daughter,? the road is not easy, and each gift is not neatly wrapped. But if you choose to become the family caregiver, there is good balanced with hardship.

Resources for Caregivers

As the number of unpaid family caregivers grow, more recognition is being brought to the issue. November has been named National Family Caregiver month, and there are resources of all sorts, from online support groups to resources about finances, finding outside care, sharing information, advocacy and more. One example is the National Family Caregivers Association. This wealth of support and information they and others offer may lighten the family caregiver?s load.

2012 - the year of the mobile | Verulam Web Design

ThResponsive Design on ipad and iphoneere can be little doubt that this has been the year that mobile internet usage has stopped being something that only the teenagers do and become mainstream. Numerous statistics on mobile internet usage from early 2012? suggest that around 30% of all internet usage is from a mobile phone*. It is widely expected that most people will use the internet via a mobile device in 2013.

New smartphones have clearly been designed with this in mind. Several android devices, like the Galaxy, have screens almost as large as the new iPad Mini. I have recently got an iPhone 5 and initially wondered why the handset has a longer, thinner design. Apart from allowing an extra row of apps on the screen, the extra screen length actually makes browsing much easier in landscape mode. Yes you have to scroll, but the larger screen length allows even my older eyes to read text more easily. The higher resolution screen ? 1136 x 640 pixels (up from 960 by 640 pixels for the iPhone 4), adds to the user experience and clarity of web browsing. I now often browse sites on my iPhone first, especially if I?m clicking on website links within emails, which I invariably access first from a mobile device, if I?m not in front of my laptop when they come in.

So what does it all? mean? Quite simply design for mobile and tablet devices is something we now consider as important as designing for browsers on traditional laptop/desktop computers. We liase with clients to define a mobile strategy, whether the client requires a specific mobile website (that is different to the main website), a ?responsive? design ( same website content, but often styled differently, or with some sections not shown) or whether they require a mobile app in addition or instead.

2013 will see further huge changes in how people access web content and how businesses approach their online strategy. It is an exciting time to be involved in the digital domain.

(AP) ? The rap artist "Fat Joe" pleaded guilty Thursday to failing to pay taxes on nearly $3 million in income he earned over two years for performances and music royalties.

The platinum-selling artist, whose real name is Joseph Cartagena, was once a Billboard chart topper with hits like the duet "What's Luv" with the R&B singer Ashanti.

Cartagena entered the plea in federal court in Newark because some of the companies he earned money from are incorporated in New Jersey.

The 42-year-old Miami Beach, Fla., resident entered pleas to two counts covering years 2007 and 2008. His sentencing will take into consideration the government's initial allegation that he failed to pay income taxes for years 2007 through 2010. Federal prosecutors said the total tax loss to the government for those four years was $718,038.

Wearing a navy suit, Cartagena looked fit and considerably slimmer than the former size that had earned him his rapper nickname. He has been very public about his efforts to shed weight after fellow rap stars died from obesity-related issues and was recently in Newark to speak to schoolchildren about health and fitness.

In federal court Thursday, when asked by U.S. Magistrate Cathy Waldor if he understood the charges he was facing, he replied, "I super-understand it."

Cartagena's lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, said outside federal court that his client "had already taken steps to resolve this situation" before he had been charged. He said the rapper hoped to pay back the taxes by the time of his sentencing April 3.

Cartagena owned the Somerville-based Terror Squad Production Inc. and Miramar Music Touring Inc., according to court papers. He also earned income from FJTS Corp., during the time in question.

The judge set bail at $250,000 and released Cartagena until his sentencing. He could face up to two years in prison and a fine of up to $200,000, plus penalties from the Internal Revenue Service.

Walmex used bribes to open 19 Mexico stores: NY Times

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc's Mexican affiliate routinely used bribes to open stores in desirable locations, according to a New York Times investigation published Monday, which cites 19 instances of the retail giant paying off local officials.

The Times first reported in April that Wal-Mart had intentionally stifled an internal probe into bribery at its Mexican affiliate Walmex . Late last month, Mexico's anti-corruption body said it found no irregularities in the permits Wal-Mart received in the country, but that two audits remain underway.

In the new report published on its web site, the Times detailed specific instances in which Walmex allegedly paid off officials to expand in Mexico. The alleged payoffs often related to zoning laws and environmental permits that would have otherwise prevented Walmex's opening of new stores.

Much of the report focused on a store built near ancient ruins in Teotihuacan, north of Mexico City. Walmex was hit by protests in 2004 after announcing plans to build a warehouse less than a mile from the city.

In a statement Monday night, Wal-Mart spokesman David Tovar said the company was already looking into the allegations in the Times article regarding the permitting and licensing process for the Teotihuacan store, as part of a broader internal probe that Wal-Mart began over a year ago into potential violations of the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

"At this point, the investigation is still ongoing and we have not yet reached final conclusions," he said, adding that the company has taken steps to improve its compliance programs.

Wal-Mart is also cooperating with the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on the matter, Tovar said.

The U.S. Justice Department, the SEC, U.S. lawmakers and authorities in Mexico have all been conducting their own probes.

An official at Mexico's federal attorney general's office told Reuters that an initial probe had been opened following the Times' April story, but that prosecutors did not uncover sufficient evidence to file any charges.

The probe closed "a couple months ago," the official said.

In a "Leading with Integrity" letter sent to Wal-Mart employees after Monday's Times report, Chief Executive Mike Duke - who oversaw international operations from 2005 to 2009 - said integrity is the foundation of the company's culture.

"As leaders, we are measured by our weakest moment, so we can't have a weak moment in the area of integrity," Duke wrote. "We can have a bad sales day and a good sales day and hope they average out, but we can't average integrity."

Shares of Wal-Mart rose 0.65 percent to close at $69.20 in New York trading on Monday, before the Times story was posted.

STORE NEAR TEOTIHUACAN

The Times report did not give a figure for how much Wal-Mart spent on all of the alleged bribes. But it cites instances in which the company allegedly paid $221,000 in bribes to build a store near the ruins in Teotihuacan, as well as $341,000 in alleged bribes to establish a store near the Basilica de Guadalupe without appropriate permits, and another $765,000 in alleged bribes to set up a refrigerated distribution center in an environmentally fragile area near Mexico City.

According to Monday's report, Wal-Mart's international real estate committee approved Walmex's plan to spend about $8 million on the Teotihuacan store. The committee consisted of 20 or so top executives including Chairman S. Robson Walton, according to the report. Walton is a son of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton.

The earlier Times report said a 2005 Wal-Mart inquiry had found some $24 million in suspect payments in Mexico, but the world's largest retailer essentially shut down the probe and didn't notify law enforcement officials until December 2011, after the New York Times informed Wal-Mart it was looking at the issue.

That report said Walmex had taken active steps to conceal the bribery from headquarters when it was happening, but alleged that senior Bentonville executives were involved in decisions about the internal investigation.

Wal-Mart lost $10 billion of its market value immediately following the report, and has since disclosed it has spent $30 million to update its global anti-corruption program and undertaken a massive investigation into the allegations.

Wal-Mart has incurred some $100 million in various costs related to the matter.

Also, in November, Wal-Mart disclosed it expanded its internal inquiry to cover bribery allegations in Brazil, China and India, and its joint venture in India suspended its finance chief and other employees as part of its inquiry.

Bribery and corruption are pervasive in Mexico, where the justice system is weak and lower-level public sector workers earn relatively low salaries. A study last year by Transparency International showed Mexican companies were perceived to be the third-most likely behind those in China and Russia to pay bribes abroad.

Man stuck in chimney eight days before Christmas

By Lisa Fernandez, NBC Bay Area

San Francisco firefighters were called to rescue a man who got stuck in his chimney just before midnight Monday in his Pacific Heights neighborhood.

Fire crews were called to the man's?apartment where they found the man inside the chimney. It took about an hour to pull him out.

It's unclear why he was in the chimney of his apartment building, which is seven stories high. NBC Bay Area spoke to a dispatcher who said that police may have been trying to contact the man, and that he may have tried to hide in the chimney.

Firefighters at the scene said their crews had to break out special equipment and bust out some chimney bricks to remove the man.

The man was taken to the hospital, where hospital staff said he was decent shape.
