Yemen: thousands demand retrieval of stolen assets

In this Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012 photo, an elderly Yemeni woman, center, walks on a street in the old city of Sanaa, Yemen. Women in Yemen are worse off now than a year ago, when they played a significant part in the country's revolution that promised political and economic change, an international aid agency has concluded. In a report released Monday, Oxfam International said four out of five Yemeni women claim their lives have worsened over the past 12 months. Faced with an intensifying humanitarian crisis, which has left a quarter of women between the ages of 15 and 49 acutely malnourished, they say they're struggling to feed their families and are unable to participate in the country's transition. (AP) ? Thousands have taken to the streets of the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, demanding the recovery of assets they say were stolen under the country's former authoritarian ruler, Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The protesters marched to demand return of millions of dollars they allege Saleh and his family stole during his years in power. Saleh, known as a wealthy ruler who led one of the Arab world's poorest countries, stepped down after a yearlong popular uprising which forced him to relinquish power in return for immunity from prosecution.

The Friday protests come a week after several nations backing Yemen's political transition pushed for sanctions against Saleh loyalists and other groups for undermining the country's shift to democracy. The non-military sanctions include freezing financial assets or travel ban.

Bacon number: Google turns the party game into a new Easter egg

This week Google rolled out Bacon number,?another fun feature that's sure to turn a lot of otherwise productive afternoons into time sinkholes. If you've ever wanted to automate the party game "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon," Google's got your back.

By Jeff Ward-Bailey / September 14, 2012

Google now automates the "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" party game by giving you celebrity Bacon numbers. Here, Google serves up George Foreman's Bacon number, 3, along with some other queries related to Foreman and bacon.

Google.com

Sure, Google search was useful before -- you could use it to find out the weather, movie times, word definitions, and information on just about any topic. But this week Google introduced a feature that's nothing less than a revolution in search: Bacon number.

Okay, maybe "revolution" isn't quite the word we were looking for.

Google can now automate the "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" party game, which challenges players to trace any actor back to the "Footloose" star. Tom Hanks, for example, has a Bacon number of 1 (he and Bacon were in "Apollo 13" together). Zo??Saldana has a Bacon number of 2 (she was in "The Losers" with Jason Patric, who was in "Sleepers" with Bacon). And so on. To try the feature, just type "Bacon number" followed by any celebrity's name into the Google search bar.

To perform this feat, Google draws upon its Knowledge Graph -- a web of public figures, countries, famous landmarks, sports teams, and other entities and the connections between them. Google says the Knowledge Graph contains about 500 million objects, which apparently includes most actors and their filmographies. When you query an actor (or any public figure, for that matter) Google tries to trace the connections through its Knowledge Graph to arrive back at Kevin Bacon.

Apparently the Knowledge Graph has a few blind spots, though -- New York Magazine notes that it doesn't return a Bacon number for many public figures, including Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy, who had cameo parts in "The Dark Knight" and "The Dark Knight Rises." (The venerable Oracle of Bacon, a site which draws its information from IMDb, informs us that Senator Leahy is two degrees removed from Kevin Bacon.)

Google does tell us the Bacon number for some non-actor public figures. Barack Obama's Bacon number is 2. So is Bill Clinton's (although Hillary doesn't seem to have one). BuzzFeed points out that former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has a Bacon number of 3, and New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow has a Bacon number of 4. As far as we can tell, no one on the Christian Science Monitor's staff has a Bacon number.

Readers, what do you think of Google's Bacon number generator? Have you found any celebrities with unexpected Bacon numbers? Let us know in the comments section below.

Apple's new iPhone 5 dock connector: It's called Lightning and it's 80 percent smaller, but the adapter is $29

Apple details new dock connector It's called Lightning

The new iPhone deserves a new dock connector. Say hello to the reversible, 80 percent smaller, Lightning. The likes of Bose, BLW and B&O are already working on new compatible docks while the new connector itself is now easier to connect, more durable, all digital, with an adaptive interface which warrants some closer inspection. Naturally, an adapter will also be made available for your existing iPhone peripherals, but if you have a number of devices to connect, it's likely to put a hurt on your wallet -- the adapter is now for sale in the Apple Store for a whopping $29. At least it'll pair well with that Thunderbolt connection, right?

Check out all the coverage at our iPhone 2012 event hub!

Chris Stevens: US envoy to the Arab world

WASHINGTON (AP) ? At the height of Libya's civil war, Chris Stevens dashed off to the rebel stronghold of Benghazi by cargo boat to help shape an assortment of Libyan politicians and militias into the cohesive unit that would defeat Moammar Gadhafi. A year-and-a-half later, the 52-year-old ambassador died as Islamists attacked a U.S. Consulate in the same city.

Stevens' death deprives the United States of someone widely regarded as one of the most effective American envoys to the Arab world. In his unfailingly polite and friendly manner, Stevens brokered tribal disputes and conducted U.S. outreach efforts in Jerusalem, Cairo, Damascus and Riyadh. As a rising star in U.S. foreign policy, he cheerily returned to Libya four months ago, determined to see a democracy rise where Gadhafi's dictatorship for four decades flourished.

"It's especially tragic that Chris Stevens died in Benghazi because it is a city that he helped to save," President Barack Obama said from the White House Rose Garden on Wednesday. "With characteristic skill, courage and resolve he built partnerships with Libyan revolutionaries and helped them as they planned to build a new Libya."

Stevens was among four Americans who died Tuesday night after the consulate was attacked by gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades.

A native of northern California, he was dispatched to Benghazi in the midst of heavy fighting in April 2011, ferrying to the city on a Greek cargo ship to set up America's central office for coordinating military strategy, financial assistance and political work with the Libyan opposition.

What he encountered was a largely lawless coast, threatened by Gadhafi offensives and short of funds for food, fuel and medicine. Security was a constant concern, he recounted in an August 2011 news conference, but he stressed that Gadhafi's time was running out.

He was right. The war ended shortly after an angry mob killed Gadhafi in late October 2011, but not before Stevens played a critical role in coaxing Libya's disparate rebel and opposition groups into becoming the cohesive military and political force that the world would recognize as Libya's legitimate government. Colleagues and foreign officials recalled an impeccably polite and good-natured diplomat with an uncanny ability for winning friends.

"He was loved by everybody," said Ahmed al-Abbar, a Libyan opposition leader during the revolution.

As Libya's post-war challenges persisted, Stevens jumped at the opportunity earlier this year when Obama asked him to be the next U.S. ambassador in the Libyan capital of Tripoli. A couple of weeks before his departure, he was a guest of The Associated Press at the White House Correspondents' Association annual dinner and spoke of his eagerness to get to work.

"It's a really exciting time for Libya," he said, and stressed that he would stay in touch. Libya's difficult transition to democracy needed to remain in the public consciousness and not simply disappear under the category of missions accomplished, he explained.

Fathi Baja, another former member of Libya's National Transitional Council, said he met with Stevens on Tuesday morning in Tripoli and saw the ambassador working on securing top Libyan officials with invitations to the next U.S. presidential inauguration. He also was trying to send more Libyan students to study in the U.S. and attract American business to the North African country, Baja said, part of an effort to strengthen U.S.-Libyan relations after they veered from badly damaged to nonexistent under Gadhafi.

Obama described Stevens as a "role model to all who worked with him and to the young diplomats who aspire to walk in his footsteps."

"He risked his life to stop a tyrant then gave his life trying to help build a better Libya," Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said at the State Department. "The world needs more Chris Stevenses."

Obama and Clinton gathered with officials in a courtyard of the State Department, expressing their condolences and comforting those who worked closely with Stevens. The president could be seen telling several people he was sorry for their loss.

Stevens is the sixth U.S. ambassador to be killed on duty. The last was Adolph Dubs, in Afghanistan in 1979. While Stevens may have represented the next generation of so-called Arabists ? diplomats steeped in the culture and traditions of the Muslim world ? he was no pinstripe-suited bureaucrat cut of the Foggy Bottom stereotype. He cherished field work, and disarmed colleagues with his adventurousness and humility even as his reputation rose.

"His mother used to say he's got sand in his shoes," said Bob Commanday, 90, Stevens' stepfather of more than three decades.

"He wasn't someone who just stayed at his desk," said Stevens' brother, Thomas, a 46-year-old with the Justice Department in San Francisco. But, "he was a calm, cool, collected, unflappable person. When you talked to him, you'd never know he was in the middle of chaos." He was also survived by his sister, Anne, a doctor in Seattle.

Stevens came from a family of doctors and lawyers, but showed an early interest in foreign policy. At Piedmont High School near Oakland, Calif., he served as editor of the school newspaper and was active in the Model U.N. club.

"What a bore it is, waking up in the morning always the same person," said his quote in the 1978 high school yearbook. "I wish I were unflinching and emphatic and had big eyebrows and a Message for the Age."

Following his father, Jan Stevens, he graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1982. He then volunteered for the Peace Corps as an English teacher for two years in a remote village in Morocco's High Atlas Mountains ? "and quickly fell in love with this part of the world." Still, his next step was a law degree from the University of California's Hastings College of Law in 1989 and employment as a trade attorney in Washington.

One day, said a former colleague recounting Stevens' retelling of the story, the young lawyer put his head down at his desk and said to himself, "I can't do this anymore." He decided then to apply for the Foreign Service, joining in 1991.

Stevens, who by now spoke French and some Arabic, had early postings in Saudi Arabia, Syria, Israel and Egypt ? where he often camped in the Sinai Peninsula and regularly beat his superiors in tennis matches. He worked for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee staff of Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., from 2006 to 2007, where he presented himself as a political centrist in an office with several partisan conservatives. He also was remembered as a self-effacing bachelor with a wry sense of humor who drank beer, dated women and liked outdoor sports.

"He was a normal guy, not like some of the nerds from the State Department who can't relate with people," said Thomas Moore, a fellow Lugar staffer, who recalled Stevens buying a Toyota Land Cruiser just before heading to Libya for his first stint, as deputy chief of mission in 2007.

At the State Department, he had a similar reputation for being non-ideological. UC law professor David Levine, who stayed in touch with Stevens after teaching him basic litigation in his first year at Hastings, recalled Stevens' admiration of Thomas Pickering, President George H.W. Bush's ambassador to the United Nations, whom he worked under as a Middle East staffer.

"The people who he worked with were on the 'Let's engage the world,' rather than 'Let's bully the world' side of things," Levine said.

But Stevens didn't pull his punches with Gadhafi. As the embassy No. 2, he built an extensive network of contacts with Libya's eastern tribes that would serve him well later. At the same time, he wrote several confidential cables back to Washington describing the Libyan leader's bizarre behavior. In a 2009 cable, he concludes that U.S. engagement efforts remained at the mercy of Gadhafi's "mercurial inner circle"; in others, he predicts "tumult" as Gadhafi's children maneuver to succeed him.

Condoleezza Rice, who was secretary of state for part of that time, called Stevens a "wonderful officer and a terrific diplomat who was dedicated to the cause of freedom."

"His service in the Middle East throughout his career was legendary," she said.

In a YouTube video just before leaving for Libya to take up his latest post of ambassador, Stevens said he was "thrilled to watch the Libyan people stand up and demand their rights" during the revolution. "I'm excited to return to Libya to continue the great work we've started, building a solid partnership between the United States and Libya to help you, the Libyan people, achieve your goals."

Obama stressed that Stevens' death wouldn't end that effort.

"This attack will not break the bonds between the United States and Libya," the president vowed.

91% Compliance

Usually I write a review the day after I first watch the movie as I like to give it time to sink in. It's been three days since I watched "Compliance" and I'm still not sure whether it's a good film or not. There are two things I am sure of though; this is one of the must see films of the year and Pat Healy is American cinema's best kept secret, a chameleon of an actor. Remember the name. The event portrayed here is non-fictional, based on true events which occurred over seventy times in thirty states across America. A tele-marketer, skilled at manipulating people over the phone, would call various retail establishments posing as a police officer and accuse a staff member of stealing money from a customer. Here his target is ChickWich, a fictional fast food chain managed by middle-aged Dowd and staffed by a variety of young slackers. Dowd receives a call from the fake cop, Healy, who informs her that Walker, a pretty young staff member, has committed the theft. Dowd takes Walker into a backroom where most of the film plays out. Healy claims he is busy with a larger investigation at Walker's home and won't be able to visit the restaurant anytime soon. Walker is given a choice, she can spend the night in jail or she can allow Dowd to strip search her on the premises. Both Dowd and Walker are initially uncomfortable with this suggestion but decide it's the easier of the two options. Despite carrying out his request, Healy isn't fully satisfied and makes more demands which escalate in their oddness. Due to it being a busy Friday night, Dowd calls her boyfriend Camp, who she has misled her employees into believing is her fiance, and asks him to keep watch on Walker. She passes him the phone and Healy realizes he can really push the limits with this guy. Up to this point the movie had me hooked, mainly due to the fantastic performances by Dowd and Healy, but the introduction of Camp had me mentally stepping back from what I was watching. Apparently what transpires actually occurred in real life but it's so hard to swallow that it damages the integrity of the film. I had to keep reminding myself this was a true story as it plays out like a scenario from a cheap porno flick. Part of the problem is the acting by Walker and Camp, simply not strong enough to make the situation believable. I don't live in America so can't comment on the attitudes toward authority figures in that country but certainly where I'm from the public maintains a healthy mistrust of those in positions of power. That's probably the case across Europe where I imagine audiences will struggle with the film. By sticking to the truth, Zobel has ironically made his movie a punishing test of the viewer's ability to suspend disbelief. What alternative does he have? A European cut where Dowd tells Healy to screw himself within five minutes? Americans will undoubtedly find this movie a lot more involving. Us disobedient Europeans will have to keep telling ourselves "It's not just a movie!"

A University of Louisville scientist has found a way to prevent inflammation and bone loss surrounding the teeth by blocking a natural signaling pathway of the enzyme GSK3b, which plays an important role in directing the immune response.

The discovery of UofL School of Dentistry researcher David Scott, PhD, and his team recently published on-line first in the journal Molecular Medicine. The finding not only has implications in preventing periodontal disease, a chronic inflammatory disease that causes tooth loss, but also may have relevance to other chronic inflammatory diseases. Since GSK3b is involved in multiple inflammatory signaling pathways, it is associated with a number of diseases and also is being tested by scientists for its impact in Alzheimer's disease, Type II diabetes and some forms of cancer, to name a few.

"The traditional approach to dealing with periodontal disease is to prevent plaque from forming at the gum-line or prevent the consequences of periodontal disease progression," Scott said. "Our approach manipulates a natural mechanism within our bodies to prevent inflammation and subsequent degradation when exposed to the bacterium P. gingivalis."

GSK3b is known to facilitate the inflammation that occurs during bacterial infections, so blocking this enzyme from completing its normal function by using the GSK3-specific inhibitor, SB216763 stopped the inflammation process and subsequent bone loss induced by the key periodontal pathogen, P. gingivalis, Scott said.

The next step is for Scott and his team to determine whether SB216763 has any side-effects or whether they need to search for a different inhibitor of GSK3b.

Inexpensive, super-sensitive device detects even low levels of toxic metals in water, fish

EVANSTON, Ill. --- When mercury is dumped into rivers and lakes, the toxic heavy metal can end up in the fish we eat and the water we drink. To help protect consumers from the diseases and conditions associated with mercury, researchers at Northwestern University in collaboration with colleagues at Ecole Polytechnique Fdrale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, have developed a nanoparticle system that is sensitive enough to detect even the smallest levels of heavy metals in our water and fish.

The research was published September 9 in the journal Nature Materials.

"The system currently being used to test for mercury and its very toxic derivative, methyl mercury, is a time-intensive process that costs millions of dollars and can only detect quantities at already toxic levels," said Bartosz Grzybowski, lead author of the study. "Ours can detect very small amounts, over million times smaller than the state-of-the-art current methods. This is important because if you drink polluted water with low levels of mercury every day, it could add up and possibly lead to diseases later on. With this system consumers would one day have the ability to test their home tap water for toxic metals."

Grzybowski is the Kenneth Burgess Professor of Physical Chemistry and Chemical Systems Engineering in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science.

The new system is comprised of a commercial strip of glass covered with a film of "hairy" nanoparticles, a kind of a "nano-velcro," that can be dipped into water. When a metal cation --- a positively charged entity, such as a methyl mercury --- gets in between two hairs, the hairs close up, trapping the pollutant and rendering the film electrically conductive.

A voltage-measuring device reveals the result; the more ions there are trapped in the "nano-velcro," the more electricity it will conduct. To calculate the number of trapped particles, all one needs to do is measure the voltage across the nanostructure film. By varying the length of the nano-hairs covering the individual particles in the film, the scientists can target a particular kind of pollutant that is captured selectively. With longer "hairs," the films trap methyl mercury, shorter ones are selective to cadmium. Other metals also can be selected with appropriate molecular modifications.

The nanoparticle films cost somewhere between $1 to $10 to make, and the device to measure the currents costs a few hundred dollars, Grzybowski said. The analysis can be done in the field so the results are immediately available.

Researchers were particularly interested in detecting mercury because its most common form, methyl mercury, accumulates as one goes up the food chain, reaching its highest levels in large predatory fish such as tuna and swordfish. In the United States, France and Canada, public health authorities advise pregnant women to limit fish consumption because mercury can compromise nervous system development in the fetus.

Researchers used this system to detect levels of mercury in water from Lake Michigan, near Chicago, among other samples. Despite the high level of industry in the region, the mercury levels were extremely low.

"The goal was to compare our measurements to FDA measurements done using conventional methods," said Francesco Stellacci of EPFL, co-corresponding author of the study. "Our results fell within an acceptable range."

The researchers also tested a mosquito fish from the Florida Everglades, which is not high on the food chain and thus does not accumulate high levels of mercury in its tissues. The U.S. Geological Survey reported near-identical results after analyzing the same sample.

"This technology provides an inexpensive and practical alternative to the existing cumbersome techniques that are being utilized today," said Jiwon Kim, graduate student in Grzybowski's lab in the department of chemistry at Northwestern. "I went to Lake Michigan with our sensor and a hand-held electrometer and took measurements on-site in less than a minute. This direct measurement technique is a dream come true for monitoring toxic substances."

Personal Trainer Orange County And Separating ?Exercise? And ...

As a Personal Trainer Orange County, I first read Ken Hutchins? ?Exercise vs. Recreation? article in 1996. I give some thought to his suggestions in this field that they are probably the most important ideas from the history of exercise taught. They?ve certainly improved my way of life significantly. And chances are you probably have not heard of these ideas prior to discovering this article. I really hope the suggestions help you as they have me.

With this context, ?exercise? denotes activity that is performed to enhance your body physically (increase strength, endurance, cardiovascular efficiency, help with losing fat, preserve or increase bone thickness and lean muscle tissue, etc). ?Recreation?, on the other hand, means things which we all do for fun and enjoyment (that are psychological purposes). In his essay about the subject, Ken identified five key differences regarding what suitably qualifies as ?exercise? and what qualifies as ?recreation?: Exercise is logical. Recreation is instinctive. Recreation is anything you feel is fun for you (?instinctive?), while proper exercise comes from a rational approach of looking at how to efficiently, effectively, and safely load the muscle and joint functions on the human body.

The principles of exercise are universal. Recreation is personal. The muscle and joint functions of the human body are fundamentally the same for all of us, thus the requirements for effectively loading the muscles to provide effective exercises are universal (applies to everybody). In a way, effective exercise is exactly the same for everyone. Recreation, on the other hand, is personal. The Thing I enjoy doing for fun is quite different to what you enjoy.

Exercise has general transfer to many other activities, whereas recreation is specific. The benefits of exercise (stronger muscles, more endurance, better cardiovascular efficiency, etc.) will enhance your ability to perform any physical task (including running a race or carrying groceries from your car to the kitchen). Recreational skills are specific for that activity itself, and also the motor skills learned from one task don?t transfer well with other activities (learning the ability of swinging a golf club will do little to enhance your bowling game, for example).

The purpose of exercise is physical. The intentions of recreation are psychological. As discussed earlier, the primary purpose for exercise is to improve the body physically. Recreation is made for fun, leisure, relaxation, etc. (i.e. mental and psychological reasons).

Proper exercise is not fun. Recreation is fun. Recreation has to be enjoyable for you ? that?s the whole motive for doing so! Exercise, on the other hand, is about loading the muscles of the body in a demanding manner, and that?s difficult when you?re getting this done effectively. The results and advantages of exercise are incredibly fun but if the procedure of exercising is fun, chances are it?s not challenging enough for the muscles to become qualified as meaningful exercise.

So what will be the practical implications of such ideas? Essentially it?s the only certain version of training for strength (including slow-motion training for strength) qualifies to be included within an useful concept for the word ?exercise?. And it is not useful to consider alternative activities as ?exercise?. (That does not mean other exercises are ?bad?. It just means they are not ideal for exercise.)

Significant issues often occur whenever people mistakenly confuse and mix exercise with recreation. As an example, before becoming more enlightened on this subject, years ago I played basketball considering that it was fun and likewise because I thought it was good exercise. I now discover that compared to the muscular loading generated through proper strength training, basketball provides haphazard, inefficient, and sometimes low intensity muscular loading. Because of this, basketball is relatively ineffective for stimulating physical improvements in my body. Also, the high-force pounding my joints experienced from countless hours of running and jumping started to make me feel the result of osteoarthritis on my knees at age 23 (much too young for a person?s joints to begin deteriorating!). As an alternative for a better body, basketball had given me the opposite result as far as my prematurely exhausted knees were concerned.

I would?ve been more satisfied if I?d separated exercise and recreation, stimulating change in my body from rational strength training, and just played basketball that it was fun for me (rather than thinking that it was something good for me physically).

As I became convinced of Ken?s suggestions on the topic and quit all of the non-strength training activities I had previously thought to be ?exercise?, I didn?t get stronger or weaker, and I also did not get leaner or fatter after stopping those things. The only difference was my knees started feeling much better right after removing the pounding I was taking from jogging and other similar things I?ve been doing. Exercise for me now is actually safer and even more effective, and the things I do for recreation are usually more fun because I only do them for fun and not because I believe like I have to do them for exercise.

My recommendation as a Personal Trainer Orange County would be to perform sensible training for strength for exercise to improve the body physically, and then make great use of your fitter body to enjoy the rest of the activities you love to do for recreation (whatever they could be, including swimming, basketball, running a marathon, badminton, etc.) In case you mix exercise and recreation, exercise is less effective and also much dangerous, and recreation is less fun. Keep these things separate and I think you?ll be more satisfied.

Semiconductors grown on graphene could fundamentally change semiconductor industry

ScienceDaily (Sep. 10, 2012) ? Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) have patented and are commercializing GaAs nanowires grown on graphene, a hybrid material with competitive properties. Semiconductors grown on graphene are expected to become the basis for new types of device systems, and could fundamentally change the semiconductor industry. The technology underpinning their approach has recently been described in a publication in the American research journal Nano Letters.

The new patented hybrid material offers excellent optoelectronic properties, says Professor Helge Weman, a professor at NTNU's Department of Electronics and Telecommunications, and CTO and co-founder of the company created to commercialize the research, CrayoNano AS. "We have managed to combine low cost, transparency and flexibility in our new electrode," he adds.

The patented method of growing semiconductor nanowires on atomically thin graphene uses MBE (Molecular Beam Epitaxy) to grow the nanowires.

"We do not see this as a new product," Weman says. "This is a template for a new production method for semiconductor devices. We expect solar cells and light emitting diodes to be first in line when future applications are planned."

Sunny outlook for nanowires

"Graphene is experiencing tremendous attention worldwide," Weman says. "Companies like IBM and Samsung are driving this development in the search for a replacement for silicon in electronics as well as for new applications, such as flexible touch screens for mobile phones. Well, they need not wait any more. Our invention fits perfectly with the production machinery they already have. We make it easy for them to upgrade consumer electronics to a level where design has no limits."

This invention is thus thought to be an enabler for a future platform for electronics and optoelectronics devices. One possible device with very large market potential is a nanowire solar cell. This type of solar cell has the potential to be efficient, cheap and flexible at the same time. The invention also makes it possible to imagine a future with self-powered nanomachines and advanced 3D integrated circuits built on graphene and semiconductor nanowires, enabling smaller and more efficient electronics.

Weman himself envisions flexible self-powered consumer electronics integrated into everything from clothes to notepads, and of course traditional cell phones, tablets and exercise accessories.

"Semiconductors grown on graphene could become the basis for new types of device systems, and could transform the semiconductor industry by introducing graphene as a preferred substrate for many applications," he says.

A Manhattan Beach house filled with antiques

by Simona Ganea, posted in Real Estate, on September 11th, 2012

Located on Manhattan Beach, in Brooklyn, New York, this house is a real treasure. Its owners, Gary and Abbe Lasker, have been living here since 1978. Since then, they literary filled this home with antiques and personal memories and treasures. The house has been remodeled several times but it still has its original charm. The renovations done for the house were not entirely successful.

There have been some funny stories along the way but, overall, these stories only gave the home more character. The couple saved considerable money by doing most of the work themselves. This was not only profitable financially but also beneficial for the original character of the house. As for the interior d?cor, there are many interesting things to analyze there.

Mr. Lasker is a retired antiques dealer and Ms. Lasker an employee at an antiques gallery. As you may imagine, they are both passionate about their work. It?s why they chose to fill their home with beautiful antiques. Their style is eclectic and we can clearly see that in the interior d?cor. This house is full of memories. However, it is now time for it to continue its journey without its owners. The house is now on the market at the price of $1,695,000 and it?s ready to start a new chapter in its existence, to create new memories and to provide cozy shelter for new owners.
